Going beyond

A going beyond is the fact of rolling during one moment, in general relatively short, beside an other vehicle at an high speed with his with a final aim to precede it. The way used for to exceed or to double a vehicle depends on the and highway type convention used in the country.

Route with double direction

For the roads with double direction, the going beyond is carried out on the way opposed within the meaning of circulation, i.e. with on the way of left for the countries in which the direction of circulation is on the right (for example in North America and Europe except the British Isles) and on the way of right-hand side for the countries whose direction of circulation is on the left (for example in Great Britain and with the Japan).

Route with three ways

For the 3-lane roads with double direction, the center lane is intended for the going beyond for the two directions of circulation (like with the changes of management). Consequently, it should be used only if it is free. It is necessary to keep its lit indicator as long as one is in this way. The way located completely on the left should then never be used to exceed.

Route with separate roadways

For the roads with separated roadways, the going beyond is carried out on the ways located inside (i.e. those which are located more close to the central reservation). One always passes a vehicle by the way located immediately on his left.

Exceptions

In France, there exist some exceptions which authorize the goings beyond by the line:
  • On a road with double direction, when a vehicle slows down by tightening the line of centers to turn left and that there is sufficient place on the right or of course a 3-lane road, if it is stopped in the center lane.
  • On a road with separated roadways, when circulation slows down and becomes dense, the fact that a file located on the right advances more quickly than another located on the left is not regarded as a going beyond and the motorists of right-hand side can thus roll more quickly than those of left. ( the cyclist who approaches an intersection of streets and must carry on his road very right does not have to station in the file of cars to the stop on the left when the way which it follows allows two files of circulation in each direction. )
  • One can pass by the line a tram which circulates in the middle of a road with double direction, provided that passengers are not going down from the right-sided.
  • For the other cases, the going beyond by the line is prohibited , in particular on highway, even when an inattentive or stubborn driver uses the way of left whereas it should roll on the way of right-hand side. One should not either of course, to use the Hard shoulder to double.

Conditions

To be able to exceed, it is necessary:
  • in France, if one is a motorist wishing to pass a two-wheeled vehicle, to leave a space side of 1,5 meters in open country or 1 meter in agglomeration.
  • to have a good visibility forwards. To guarantee a good visibility at the time of the going beyond, it is better sometimes not too much to approach the vehicle that one wants to exceed, especially if he acts of a Heavy truck. It can then be necessary to be off-set slightly towards the line of centers. It also should be paid attention if this vehicle is not on the point of exceeding a Deux-roues hidden.
  • to make sure that no driver behind is already doubling
  • to make sure that one will be able to take again his place on the right after the going beyond: it is necessary to take account of the security distances before carrying out this operation. Thus the exceeded vehicle should be obliged to slow down to have a sufficient interval of safety (if two vehicles are very brought closer, it thus should either be exceeded both, or to exceed some no).
  • to make sure that the going beyond will not last too a long time: indeed, one should not delay on the way used for the going beyond so as to leave the way of right-hand side less the possible for a long time. Thus in general, it is advised to have a difference in speed of approximately 20 km/h with the vehicle which one wishes to pass, even if it means to retrogress and use the engine during a short moment with high mode. However, even to double a short moment, authorized maximum speed should not be exceeded.

then:

  • to indicate its intention to exceed using the indicator

  • to change way
  • and finally to gradually fold back in front of the vehicle while having put its indicator. One can start to fold back oneself as from the moment when one sees well the vehicle exceeded in the interior rear view mirror.

When the going beyond is undergone, it is interdict to accelerate, this action constitutes an serious error which can involve a loss of points and a fine. It is necessary to facilitate the going beyond with the driver which exceeds, for that it is necessary well to hold its line and to even slow down if it encounters difficulties

Indication

According to the roads, the goings beyond are authorized or not, various indications are then installation: panel of prohibition of going beyond, continuous line or line of dissuasion.
