Godfrey Kneller or Gottfried Kneller , (August 8th 1646 with Lübeck - October 19th 1723 with London) is a British painter of portraits. The name which it carried in Lübeck was Gottfried Kniller and, it is still under this patronym that the museums of Lübeck present these works.

He studied in Flanders under Rembrandt, then remained some time in Italy. He passed then in England where Charles II appointed it its first painter, title which he preserved under the successors of this prince. He made the portrait of the largest characters of the time, Charles II, Louis XIV, Pierre Large the, the Charles archduke, etc
