Godfather 2 ( The Godfather II ) is a American Film carried out by Francis Ford Coppola in 1974. The weather is following the film during the Godfather , left two years earlier, and precedes Godfather 3 .

Synopsis

Michael Corleone succeeded her Vito father with the head of the family. It then directs the businesses of Corleone of a hand relentless, by eliminating its enemies the ones after the others. But while trying in vain to resemble his father, it will show only one authority devastator which little by little will move away it from the people that it likes.

The second part of the Godfather offers two parallel stories. One implies the chief of the Maffia into 1958/1959 after the events of first film, the other is a succession of flashbacks which follow the course of his/her father, Vito Corleone, of its youth in Sicily (1901) with the creation of the Famille Corleone in New York, of 1917 to 1925.

The film starts in 1901, in the town of Corleone in Sicily, with the funeral of the father of the young person Vito, Antonio Andolini, who were assassinated for an insult with the local lord of the Maffia, Don Ciccio. During the procession, the older brother of Vito is assassinated because he swore to be avenged for the Gift. The mother of Vito goes at Don Ciccio to beseech her leniency, but he refuses, knowing that nine years later, Vito become adult will also seek him to avenge the murders for his/her father and his brother. The mother then takes Don Ciccio as an hostage with the point of a knife, allowing her son to escape but the men of Ciccio kill it. They then excavate the city to find the boy, but it is helped in its escape by the townsmen. Vito ends up being found on an out-going vessel for New York. Ellis Island has, an agent of immigration confuses the birthplace of Vito with its family name, and it is recorded like “Vito Corleone”.

At the end of the years 1950, in a scene similar to the opening of first film, Michael Corleone, the godfather of the Corleone family, milked various businesses and problems of the family in a festival looked after in the family residence with Lake Tahoe, Nevada to celebrate the first communion of his/her son. He meets the Senator of Nevada Pat Geary, which mistakes Corleone, to discuss the price of the licenses of play for the hotels casino which the Family buy.

Michael treats also loss of control of her sister, Connie, which recently divorced and its projects of remarriage a man without means and support, that Michael disapproves. He also speaks with Johnny Ola, the henchman of the Jewish gangster Hyman Roth, who supports the movement of Michael in the industry of the play. Tardily, Michael treats with Frank “Five Angels” Pantangeli, which took again the territory of Caporegime Peter Clemenza after his death, and now has problems with the Rosato brothers, who are supported by Roth. Pentangeli, share abruptly, after having said to Michael that “your father made deals with Hyman Roth, your father respected Hyman Roth, but your father forever trusted Hyman Roth”.

Later, in the night, an attempted murder is made on Michael, who survives when his Kay wife notices hangings of windows of the room to be laid down which are inexplicably open. Then, Michael said to Tom Hagen that the blow was made with the assistance of somebody of close relation, and that it must leave, entrusting all his capacity to Hagen to protect its family.

In 1917, Vito Corleone, become adult, works in a store of food of New York with his/her friend Genco Abbandando. The vicinity is controlled by a member of “the Black Hand”, Don Fanucci, which extorts payments of protection from the tradesmen of the district. One night, the neighbor of Vito, Clemenza, requires of him to hide weapons for him, and later, to refund the favor, takes it along in a luxurious apartment where they commit their first crime, stealing an elegant carpet together.

Frankie is left for death, and its bodyguard, Willie Cicci, are struck by a car.

To Nevada, Tom Hagen goes in a house closed following a call of the older brother of Michael, Fredo: the Senator Geary is implied in the death of a prostitute. Tom proposes to the senator to deal with the problem in order to bring back “the friendship” between the Senator and the Corleone Family.

During this time, Michael meets Roth in Havana, Cuba. The dictator Fulgencio Batista solicits the US investors there, while he fights against the communist guerillas who try to reverse his government. At the time of a festival of birthday for Roth, Michael mentions that there is a possibility that the rebels could gain, returning problematic to make deals in Cuba. This comment encourages Roth to point out to Michael, into private, that this last did not deliver the two million dollars sealing their partnership.

Fredo arrives with Havana to bring the money, and when Michael mentions the names of Hyman Roth and Johnny Ola, Fredo says that it met them forever. Michael entrusts to her brother that it was Roth which tried to kill it, and which it for testing again. Michael ensures Fredo that it already made its provisions, and that “Hyman Roth will never see the New Year's Day”.

Instead of giving the money to Roth, Michael asks him who gave the order to kill Frank Pentangeli. Hyman Roth avoids the question, rather speaking with anger about the murder about his/her old friend, Moe Greene, that Michael had orchestrated (as shown in first film).

Michael asked Fredo, which knows Havana, to take along the Senator Geary as well as the other officers and important business men to spend the good time, Fredo makes pretense then not recognize Johnny Ola. A little later during a spectacle of striptease, Fredo announces extremely that Johnny Ola recommended the place to him, contradicting what he said to Michael before, that he had never seen Roth or Ola. Michael now realizes that the traitor is his own brother, and sends her bodyguard to deal with Roth.

Johnny Ola is strangled, but Roth, already in a delicate health condition, was taken along in a hospital, where the henchman of Michael goes to try to kill it. With the festival of the New year organized by Batista, under the strokes of midnight, Michael firmly seizes Fredo by the head and embraces it: “I know that it is you, Fredo; you broke me the heart”. When an attack envisaged by the guerillas occurs, the guests flee, but Fredo does not want to leave with Michael, fearing for her life, although Michael ensures Fredo that it is always his brother and that it is the only exit door.

Michael turns over to her seat to Lake Tahoe, where Hagen says to him that Roth is escaped of Cuba after having survived the attempted murder and is again in Miami, that the bodyguard of Michael died, and that Fredo probably hides in New York. Hagen informs as Michael as Kay had a miscarriage while it had left.

Of return at the time of Gift Vito, Don Fanucci of the Black Hand is now conscious of the traffics and the partnership between Vito, Clemenza and Sal Tessio, and wants its share. Clemenza and Tessio are ready to pay the sum required by Fannuci, but Vito is hesitant and proposes with his/her friends that it makes accept in Fanucci less money - and indeed, Vito convinces Fanucci to take only one sixth of what it required (100 dollars instead of 600). Immediately after, during the festival of the vicinity, Vito kills Fanucci. With died Fanucci, Vito gains the respect of the vicinity and starts to intercede in the local arguments, operative since of its store, Genco Olive Oil Company (named according to his/her friend Genco Abbandando).

To Washington, cd., a senatorial committee, whose Senator Geary is member, directs an investigation on the Corleone family. The members of the committee question the “soldier” dissatisfied Willie Cicci, but they cannot imply Michael, because Cicci forever received orders direct of him. When Michael appears before the committee, the Senator Geary makes a large spectacle by supporting the Italian-American ones and excuses processes of the committee then. Michael makes a statement which puts at the challenge the committee to produce only one witness to confirm the loads against him. The audience finishes whereas the president of the committee announces that it has a witness able to do it.

Frank Pentangeli, which did not die in the attack of the Rosato Brothers, made a market with the FBI, and will testify against Michael. Tom Hagen and Michael discuss the problem, observing that this strategy of Roth to destroy Michael was well planned. The brother of Michael, Fredo, is found and was persuaded to go back to Nevada, and in a private meeting he explains to Michael his treason: jealous to have been isolated of the direction of the Family in favor of Michael, he wants the respect and his due. He helped Roth thinking that there would be something for him, but it swears that he did not know that Roth wanted to kill Michael. He as says to Michael as the chief of the Sénatorial committee is close to Roth. Michael says then to Fredo: “You are nothing any more now. Not a brother, not a friend, nothing” and declare in Rocco Lampone that nothing must arrive at Fredo as long as their mother is always alive.

At the audience in which Frank Pentangeli must testify, Michael arrives with the brother of Pentangeli, whose only presence pushes Pentangeli to reconsider its preceding declarations on Michael. When Pentangeli is questioned, he affirms that he said to the FBI what they wanted to hear. Without any other person to testify with load against Michael, the committee defers, with Hagen, which is used as lawyer in Michael, requiring strong excuses.

In a part of the hotel then, Kay announces in Michael that she wants to leave it Michael, and to carry their children with her. Michael tries to alleviate it, but loses her coolness and striking violently when it reveals to him that its miscarriage was in fact an abortion.

While he visits Sicily in family, Vito is presented to a Gift very old Ciccio as the man who imports their olive oil in America, and which wants the blessing of the old Gift. When Ciccio requires of Vito which was his/her father, said Vito, “the name of my father is Antonio Andolini, and this is for you”! , cutting the stomach of the old man with a knife, thus avenging death for his/her father, his mother and her brother.

When Carmella Corleone, the widow of Vito and the mother of her children, dies, the whole Corleone family is joined together. Michael always rejects pitiful Fredo, which he refuses to see, but he yields when Connie requires of him. The pressure of Michael and Fredo, means with the capo of Michael that the execution of Fredo is cancelled.

Michael, Tom Hagen and Rocco Lampone discuss their last treaty with Hyman Roth, which was unprofitably to seek asylum in various countries, and was even refused in Israel like a returning Jew. Michael rejects the council of Hagen which the Corleonne family is not rather any more robust, and which it is not necessary to kill the brothers Rosatos and Roth for revenge. Later, Hagen returns a visit in Frank Pentangeli, held on a military base. Hagen suggests in Pentangeli that it removes itself the life, with the manner of the former Romans who, in return, obtained the promise that them family would be dealt with after their suicide.

With the complicity of Connie, and Michael absent, Kay visits her children in hiding-place, but not being able to be solved to leave them, is delayed. When Michael arrives finally, it closes the door with the face coldly to him.

Godfather 2 reached his apogee by an assembly of assassinations and deaths, evoking the end of the first godfather. Whereas it arrives at an airport to be stopped, Hyman Roth is killed by Rocco Lampone disguised as a journalist, and Lampone is then killed. On military base, Frank Pentangeli is found died, having followed the instructions of Hagen. Finally, Fredo is assassinated by Al Neri while they fish on the lake Tahoe, whereas Fredo quoted one “I greet you Marie” to catch a fish.

One is now in 1941, and the Corleone family prepares a festival of birthday surprised for Vito. Sony introduces Carlo Rizzi, the husband of Connie and the future traitor of Sony, with his family. They speak about the recent attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, and Michael shocks everyone by announcing that it has just enlisted in the Navy. Sony ridicules the choice of Michael, and Tom Hagen mentions how his/her father has great hopes for Michael. Fredo is the only one which supported the decision of his/her brother. Sal Tessio enters with the cake for the festival, and when Vito, arrives, all except Michael run to greet it.

The final scene of film shows Michael sitting with Lake Tahoe, in a contemplative silence.

Comment

Second shutter of the trilogy, Godfather 2 , thanks to many flashbacks, made intersect the destiny of Vito Corleone and his/her Michael son. The film is indeed alternatively made up of scenes of the present (during which Michael is with the orders of the family) and of last (telling the social rise of Vito Corleone). This alternation makes it possible Francis Ford Coppola to make comparison between the two characters, one of the originalities of film. This feature-length film is also the occasion for the realizer of Italian origin to pay a homage to the many people which emigrated towards the United States. It is in particular the case at the time of the scene during which the young person Vito Corleone unloads with Ellis Island with his Italian compatriots.
