God helps those who help themselves is a company founded jacobine in August 1827 with an aim of acting on the electorate by correspondences and publications. She was thus intended for the political training of the voters for legislative announced the in November and to coordinate the action of the liberals, so much monarchists (doctrinary) that republicans (democratic), so that the opposition obtains a maximum of seats.
The meeting where the formation of the company was decided is held at Paravey, former adviser of State; it was chaired by François Guizot. Montalivet assisted to with it. Company name or currency was proposed by Ludovic Vitet, former deputy.
The direction of the Company was entrusted at a committee elected with the poll, every three months, as a general meeting; any member residing or correspondent was to pour a monthly contribution. The use of the funds and the implementation of the resolutions of the management committee were allotted to a secretary: Andre Marchais.
The company printed a vigorous movement: petitions arrived at the Room; the booklets followed one another quickly; the action of the press was bolder. The Aide company was reinforced without delay.
One of its first actions was to organize the funeral of the deputy Jacques-Antoine Manuel, on August 24th, 1827. Two young republicans, Armand Marrast and Louis-Adolphe Robin-Morhéry, were designated by the company to take the head of the convoy, followed by more than 100.000 people; it was the first public demonstration against the policy of Charles X.
The company God helps those who help themselves played a great part in the elections of November 1827 by finding for example 15.500 voters “forgotten” during the preceding elections. Its action made it possible to the liberals to obtain 70 deputies. This result influenced the following ministry, so that the Viscount of Martignac, which was royalist, was him also tried by liberal reforms.
After the election, Association crossed one crisis period, torn between those which were estimated satisfied and those which wished its dissolution. Many doctrinary (liberal monarchists) left the Association which posted from now on its democratic color clearly. Desired Guizot to remain member but kept away more from the management committee.
The most radical members of the Company took share to the Révolution of July. The activity of the company continues under the Monarchie of July under the impulse of Etienne Garnier-Pages, until 1834.
