Goat of Mendès
The Bouc of Mendès is one of the names given to the representation of Baphomet by Eliphas Levi at the 19th century. It is a well-known Symbole in Occultisme, in some practical satanists, or certain traditions.
Origin and description
It is supposed that Levi it is based on descriptions of the god ram Banebdjedet honoured in Mendès by Hérodote:Mendésiens, have many veneration for the goats and the goats, and more still for these than for those, and it is because of these animals that they honor those which take care of it. They especially have in great veneration a goat which they consider more than all the others. When it has suddenly died, all names it mendésien is in mourning.
It arrived, while I was in Egypt, an astonishing thing in names mendésien: a goat had trade with a woman publicly, and this adventure was known of everyone.
Hérodote adds that in Egyptian language, Mendès meant Bouc. The mourning which the death of the goat caused points out that which the Égyptiens with died of their bull Apis expressed.
It carries star to five branches reversed on the face, the number “666” on before arm (and not the hand or the face as advertisement the Bible) a Croix reversed in the right hand and holds up its left hand with the sign Cornu.
In the culture Judeo-Christian, the Goat of Mendès is a fallen angel, as its wings point out it.
Symbolism of the goat
- the goat is a symbol of fruitfulness, lunar and night. It is immolé by the Bacchus god in ancient Greece. The god Side, fauna or satyr belong to the most common representations (recently represented by a Fauna in film of Guillermo Del Toro, the Labyrinth of Side ).
- In the satanic worships , its head is used to drive out the Mauvais spirits. The majority of the Anthropologues suppose that this practice was inspired by older tribal Rites. One finds in certain worships modern satanists, as the admirers of Mendès this shape of purification of the impurities of the environment (it is supposed that the cry symbolic system “a head for Mendès” comes from the symbolism of the Goat of Mendès).
