Go-Kōgon

The emperor Go-Kōgon (後光厳天皇, Go-Kōgon Tennō , (April 14th 1336 - March 12th 1374) was the fourth of the applicants of the Cour of North of the Japan. He reigned of the September 25th 1352 with the April 9th 1371.

Its personal name was Iyahito (弥仁). Its posthumous Nom was given to him in memory of that of the emperor Kōgon (one can translate the prefix Go-, 後, by “posterior”, which thus gives “posterior Kōgon Emperor”.)

Genealogy

Go-Kōgon was the second wire of the first applicant of North, Kōgon, and thus the brother of its predecessor Sukō. It had several wives and much children, of which the future emperor of North Go ' yū.

Biography

In 1351, Takauji briefly turns over to the service of the Court of the South, making it possible this one to briefly reinforce its control on the imperial line. However, peace hardly lasts, and in 1352, the dynasty of the South evacuates Kyōto, removing with them the withdrawn emperors of North Kōgon and Kōmyō, like Sukō and the crown prince Naohito, wire of the Kōgon emperor, with the result that there is not then more emperor with Kyōto. Because of that, made Takauji of the second wire of Kōgon, imperial prince Iyahito, the new emperor of North Go-Kōgon.

During this period, called time Nanboku-chō, antagonism between the two dynasties competitors disturbs the law and order with Kyōto, and the city is on several occasions captured by the Court of the South. The Go-Kōgon emperor is on several occasions forced to flee the capital and to take refuge, inter alia places, in the Province of Ōmi. About the moment when Yoshimitsu Ashikaga is named Shogun, in 1368, the power of the Court of the South weakens, and the order is restored in Kyōto. Always about this time, authority of the emperor how to show his weakness.

The April 9th 1371, it abdicates in favor of his/her son, who becomes the emperor of North Go ' yū. Go-Kōgon however continues to reign as a emperor withdrawn until he dies of disease the March 12th 1374.
