Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo

Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo (death in 87 av. J. - C.), is a Roman general originating in Picenum (area located between the the Apennines and the Adriatique, corresponding to the current area of the Marches) and father of large the Pompée. It is the first of the branch of the people Pompeia to reach the senatorial statute, in spite of the anti-rural damage of the Roman Sénat. It becomes even Consul.

During the social War, in 90 av. J. - C., Strabo took again the army of Lucius Porcius Cato, died at the time of a battle against the Marses with the Lac Fucin and it took again the attack against Marses; it continued also the seat of the town of Asculum. The Italians, to deal with Pompeius Strabo and its troops, raised a very important army as men. Indeed, the Romans had 60.000 men and Italians 75.000 (these figures are important). Pompeius Strabo beat the Italians and the town of Asculum capitulated in November 89 av. J. - C. the officers of the city were whipped or decapitated, the captive civilians were forced to leave Asculum without their goods which were sold and whose product of the sale returned in Strabo. Pompeduis Silo (chief of Marses) and the Italian rebels gave up the capital of the Italica confederation, and fled towards the town of Samnium, in the South of Italy. This Roman victory broke the Italian revolt in north and on December 25th 89 av. J. - C., Pompeius Strabo returned to Rome in Triomphe.

After its consulate and the war, Strabo was withdrawn in Picenum with all its soldiers veterans. It remained there there until in 87 av. J. - C., following the request for assistance of Sylla to fight Caius Marius in Spain. Sylla was given the responsability to take from Strabo the command of its troops and to replace it. But when Strabo left the camp, its soldiers killed the new commander. Strabo died of the plague a little later to its death crowd withdrew her body of the funerary bed to trail it with back of ass in Rome and finally jetter its mortal remains in the the Tiber. The son of Strabo, Pumped, took again his old legions with general Picenum, and autoproclama at the 23 years age.
