Gmane is a footbridge of the Email to the discussion forums. It makes it possible to the users to reach the mailing lists in a way similar to the discussion forums Usenet. Gmane being a file, the stored messages never expire there.

The entering emails are analyzed by SpamAssassin and a software antivirus, so that the spams and the viruses are hidden or erased. Gmane being a bidirectional footbridge, it also enables you to send messages on the mailing lists. The outgoing emails are checked by TMDA to check that no spam is sent to the lists which Gmane proposes.

The project was initiated in 2001 by Lars Magne Ingebrigtsen, one of the authors of Gnus, a customer of email for Emacs.
