Gmail is a free Webmail launched on April 1st, 2004 by the company Google. It is, still today, in phase of Beta-test.

Service

The proposed service by Gmail is characterized by several points from the other services from Webmail:

  • Storage capacity of more than five Gigaoctet S which permanently increases (2830 [[Me]] in March 2007, 2860 Me in May 2007, more than 4500 Me in October 2007, 5000 Me dated November 17th, 2007).
  • Possibility of using Gmail as customer universal email thanks to the miter " Comptes" parameters: an email of confirmation is sent to the other address email, after which one can send and receive since Gmail of the emails of all his addresses (it is also necessary to ask Gmail of scanner the others limp or to carry out a redirection since the other addresses). This requires that the waiter of the transport of the other address uses the POP service What is not the case for Hotmail for example.
  • Regrouping in conversation of the emails having the same object: an email and its multiple answers, reréponses.
  • Function of follow-up allowing to follow one or more messages thanks to a special page.
  • Tri automatic of the emails.
  • Possibility of classification of the messages by the wording: the same message can belong to the various wording
  • Possibilité of creating an unlimited number of filters to classify the messages directly in the wording, to remove them or to transfer them towards another address email. These filters can be defined thanks to the address of the shipper, the recipient, the contents of the message or the subject.
  • Option seeks, which makes it possible to carry out research on the messages and their contents
  • automatic Reconnaissance of the spams and arrangement in a file Spam without need to configure.
  • Function of Tchat since February 2006, available with a large majority of navigator S, whatever the Operating system but especially having to install of software on the computer.

The interface, based on AJAX, is conceived to be simple of use. It also makes it possible to use the keyboard for the majority of the tasks. This interface is available in 38 languages (of which French). There exists a view known as of “HTML simplified”, making it possible to use the webmail without JavaScript.

Gmail makes it possible also to recover its emails:

  • in POP3, in a protected way thanks to the protocol SSL,
  • in IMAP (since October 25th, 2007),
  • like sending some via the protocol smtp.

History

Since its creation on April 1st, 2004, the Gmail service has several times advanced:

In England, following the lawsuit brought by a company exploiting a similar domain name, Google was constrained to modify its mark “gmail” in “Google Mail” as of October 2005. The users of the service gmail thus have an address in “@googlemail.com” and not “@gmail.com”. This fact reproduced in Germany in February 2007.

Until January 2007, it was necessary, to obtain a Gmail account, to be sponsored by an owner of Gmail account. The service profited as of its launching from the buzz generated by the " privilégiés".

Since February 2007, it is possible to be registered in Gmail without invitation, directly on the banner page, but the invitations can always be distributed by the former “privileged people”.

Initially limited to a Gigaoctet, Gmail passed to two gigaoctets of storage on April 1st, 2005, after its competitors had caught up with it by proposing accounts of a giga them too. The size of the Gmail accounts increases permanently by 1500 bytes a second (that is to say approximately 120 [[Byte Me]] per day). In October 2007, the increase in the disk space passed from 4,5 to 1500 bytes a second. These visible increase continues since the page of connection depend on values to reach in the fixed term. Those are currently of 2835 Me for on April 1st, 2007, of 2912 Me for on October 12th, 2007, 4321 Me for on October 23rd, 2007, 6283 Me for on January 4th, 2008 and 43008 Me for on January 17th, 2038… It should be noted that there exists even a value for on January 2nd, 3456: Number.MAX_VALUE, i.e. 1,79, the maximum number being able to be stored by a variable in Javascript.

Gmail from now on exceeded the bar of the 5000 Me, joining Hotmail and Yahoo, the only true candidates whose storage space was higher than Gmail.

Publicity

The most important change is the appearance of publicity on Gmail, before free from any type of advertisement. The Publicité S targeted Adsense are posted according to the contents of the received messages and envoys. For that, robots analyze the contents of the messages and can put it in relation to the research carried out on the Search engine Google thanks to the use of cookies. The detractors of Gmail estimate that it is an absence of respect of the private life. The defenders rétorquent that other companies also make it and that technologies Anti-spam of the services Webmail would analyze same manner the mails.

Development of the services

In February 2006, Google Talk, instant message service of Google profited from an integration of its services in Gmail. Indeed, it is possible to use the majority of the functions of instant messaging since the Gmail page, which allows chatter while consulting its emails or vice versa. However, for some languages like the Arab, this option is absent. Gmail makes it possible also now to preserve the entirety of the conversations resulting from Google Talk. These modifications are symbolized by the appearance of a small logo Google Talk in lower part of that of Gmail.

Since April 2006, Gmail integrates an direct access at Google Calendar. A new improvement was added in May, by giving direct access with Google Talk since Gmail.
