Glyptocephalus cynoglossus
Names
- In the east of the Canada, one calls this fish folds gray , language , gray plate or, more simply, gray . Its English names: witch flounder , Gray plate , pole flounder , Torbay plate , Craig fluke or flet .
- In France, one calls it distorts limanda , red limanda or folds cynoglosse .
- the binomial name Glyptocephalus cynoglossus is made of four étymons Greek, corresponding to Gravée head dog language .
Surface of distribution
On the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean Northern; Gulf the St. Lawrence and south of the Large Bench until the broad one of the
Cap Hatteras, pelagic larvae being able to meet in north until the
Strait of Beautiful-Isle; in
Iceland and north of the
Norway at the west coast of the
France.
Description
Very compressed Flat fish laterally,
Dextral (droitier), being able to reach a size of 55 cm. Its right side is brown grisâtre with sometimes dark transverse bands; the membrane of its pectoral Nageoire right tends towards the black; its left side (side plugs) is white grisâtre strewn with tiny dark points. The left side of its head carries a dozen mucous pit deep. Its small head returns 6 times in its overall length.

The witch gives thin lengthened nets. Its white flesh, delicate, very seldom parasitized and its fine perfume make a species of it very appraisal. Expressions of " queen of the plies" or of " Cadillac of the plies" are justified. A simple way of preparing it with the poële consists to soak it in egg.
