The Gloucestershire is a county located in the south-west of the England. The county includes/understands part of the Cotswold, part of the fertile valley of the river Severn and all the Forêt Dean.
The capital is Gloucester and the other principal cities are Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester and Tewkesbury. The close counties are the Gwent with the Wales and the counties cérémonials of Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Wiltshire in England. The official postal abbreviation is “Glos. ”, and not “Gloucs. ” or “Glouc. ”, often used but erroneous.
In the past, Bristol belonged to Gloucestershire, but it is not any more the case since 1373. The area of Gloucestershire of the South became part of the administrative county of Avon in 1974. When the county of Avon was abolished in 1996, its territory became a unit Autorité.
