Glossématique

The Glossématique , of the Greek glôssa meaning language , is a structural theory of linguistic worked out by Louis Hjelmslev starting from the thoughts of Ferdinand de Saussure (founder of the Structuralisme).

The glossematic theory constitutes a formal description of the languages, a deepening and an attempt at very rigorous formalization of linguistic structures of the majority of the concept of F. Saussure. It is presented besides like the prolongation and the systematization of the Saussuriennes theses, mainly starting from the idea the language is a form and not a substance .

This theory, founded and taught in a named structural linguistic school “circle of Copenhagen” will have a great influence in the fields of Sémantique and Sémiologie.

This glossematic theory is based on a concept of glossème :

  • Term of a minimal linguistic unit of the language (which can be applied to any analysis of any language).
