Glory was the first Cuirassé of open sea of the history. It was launched in 1859 for the French National marine, just after the Crimean War, where the guns Paixhans and striped had shown an extreme effectiveness against the woodens building because of their high-explosive shells.
The project was drawn by the naval engineer Dupuy of Lome. It was traditional a frigate out of wood, of 5.630 ton S, inspired by that of the Classe Algeciras, with only one bridge of battery, but all the length of the hull was covered with plate of wrought iron of 120 mm with the floating, slimming to 110 mm to protect the battery.
Its launching started an arms race naval because it made obsolete all the ship of the lines, then in service, obliging the first naval power of the time, the the United Kingdom to react as of 1860 with HMS Warrior. Its hull of wood worsened however very quickly, and it was erased service in 1879 and was destroyed in 1883. The Gloire class included/understood two other ships, the Invincible one and Normandy which were brought into service in 1862.
