Globalia is a Science fiction novel , a Utopie of Jean-Christophe Rufin published in 2004. In Folio, ISBN 2-07-030918-5

Argument

The action proceeds in a future precisely dated (first part, chapter 3) July 27 from the era globalienne. One does not know of it more, if it is not that the era globalienne is posterior with ours. A kind of world State, Globalia ensures its citizens the safety, the prosperity and a certain form of freedom. As from the moment, of course, where they do not call into question the system. The protected zones are mainly located in the northern hemisphere, while the not-zones , especially in the southern hemisphere, are considered uninhabited and are used as refuge with populations which the central capacity describes as " terroristes". Baïkal, a young person globalien, seeks to flee this company which weighs to him.

Analyzes

Globalia is a political Fable, in the line of the Meilleur of the worlds or of 1984 . The novel denounces what could become our company mondialized so some of its tendencies were pushed with their paroxysm: final fracture enters the rich person and the poor, total depoliticization, ignorance of the history, individualistic hedonism, obsessional fear of terrorism, the ecological risks and the impoverishment used like factor of social cohesion, controls information and police force by an oligopoly of multinationals.

After having written Test S on the Third world, the North-South relations, the humane questions and of the historical novel, Jean-Christophe Rufin sought with this novel to join together its two forms of literary production. It acts, in romantic form, of a kind of synthesis of these preceding tests. It specifies its matter at the end of the postface: Being the future, a novel can at most contribute so that the reader preserves a legitimate distrust. The glowing futures, whatever they are, even when they come to us under the outside smiling from democratic individualism, are to be accommodated the cool head. (p. 496)

Quotations

  • Certes, the things which one is unaware of do not miss us and yet, with their manner, they are there and exert on us a influence. (I-7)
  • Croyez me, a good enemy is the key of a company équilibrée (I-7)
  • Each time the books are rare, they resist well. To the extreme, if you prohibit them they become infinitely invaluable. To prohibit the books, it is to make them desirable. All the dictatorships knew this experiment. In Globalia, one made the opposite: one multiplied the books ad infinitum. One drowned them in their grease until their removing any value, until they become insignifiants. (III-5 folio p. 277)
