Glendalough
Glendalough is a village located on the site of old a Monastère in the Comté of Wicklow in Ireland. It was established at the 6th century by Saint Kevin, a priest Ermite, and was destroyed by English in 1398.
The place, in the beginning, was sought by Kevin saint like a peaceful retirement because of its serenity and its distance. But several disciples who wanted to follow his lesson built a provisional hamlet of churches and districts of life in the valley below the place of its slum. This one soon developed and, with the measurement of its popularity, it was one of the principal universities of religion in Ireland.
The name Glendalough comes from the Gaélique Gleann Dá Locha which means the throat (valley) of the two lakes. The site of the monastery is located between two lakes (Upper Lake and Lower Lake, is “lake above” and “lake below”) and it is one of the most popular places of Wicklow.
The monastic place includes a round Tour 33 meters height and the cross of saint Kevin, a high cross Celtic. The round tower was built during the era of the invasions Viking S in Ireland (until approximately 1066). The tower was used to protect from the relics, the books and the chalices used at the time.
The granite cliffs, with the top on the Western side of the north of Upper Lake, are popular places of climbing.
