History
Glasgow develops around a church of the 6th century built by Saint Mungo, which converts the Scot with the Christianisme. But one cannot speak about Scotland nor of Scot for the Life century. In the north of Glasgow the field of the
Pictes is, which one does not know too well if they are Brittons, nor even of the Celtes. What will become Glasgow in any case constitutes the zone more in north of the grounds controlled by the people brittonic, but which soon will belong to the
Scots, or
Gaëls of
Ireland, and which will become then, some three centuries later, for a part, Scotland. Scotland is thus heiress, by her past, of the Celtic civilization, that of
the island of Brittany , and the town of Glasgow shares the same origin. Holy Gildas (
Sant Weltaz ) and Holy Patrick (
Sant Padrig ), both
Britto-Romans, are originating in this region of the estuary of the
Clyde.
In 1175 is founded the Archevêché of Glasgow. The prosperity of the city dates from the union of Scotland with the England, in 1707.
Glasgow, which then obtained the right to trade with the islands of the the Western Indies, became the center commercial of Tabac, then Coton and Sucre. Clyde was dredged to be able to receive sea-going ships.
Glasgow dates essentially from the 18th century; the Saint-Mungo cathedral (completed in the middle of the 15th century) and the house Provand' S Lordship (1471) are older buildings, but are exceptions.
The city accommodates the Université of Glasgow, founded in 1453. It was one of the great centers of the Art nouveau with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, founder of the Glasgow School off Art .
During the Second world war, the city is considerably damaged by the German bombardments .
