Glanum
Glanum was an ancient city of the Roman Empire located close to the village of Saint-Rémy of Provence in the Rhone delta. She knew her apogee at the time of the first Roman Emperor Auguste.
The city rests on several layers of occupation: Gallic period , then hellenistic period , and finally Roman period .
History
The city goes back to the 1st Age of Iron, with an installation of slope above a source which one supposes to have been very early a place of worship (associate to the god Glan ). Moreover, the close cliffs and hills formed natural ramparts, which was at the time a defensive asset. The city develops considerably during IIe front S. - C. the sanctuary is protected by an enclosure but the city extends more largely in direction from the Antiques. The people of Glaniques belonged to the confederation of the Salyens. In last times of independence, true constructions of the type Greeks, directly inspired by Marseilles, are built: houses with Peristyle, temple, well with dromos ,… the imitation is such as one also finds a bouleutérion and an academy. The unit, still of us days preserved, with been able well to make accept an occupation of the city by the Marseillais. It seems on the contrary that the confederation of Salyens knew its last fires there, perhaps between the catch of Entremont in 125/124 and the triumph of Caecilius on Salyens gone back to 90 av. J. - C. The Romans, after having overcome the Gallic ones, settled in the city which became Glanum (in Latin). They created there an important network of water conveyance with lead drains as well as a vast network of cleansing by sewers, temples in the honor of the emperor and the imperial family, thermal baths, a Basilique, a curie, a forum, and continued to venerate the source where the vétérants legion S came to be made look after their wounds. Indeed, the Roman doctors declared that water was " magique" and that it looked after the body. Itself clutched made there look after its leg, and in thanks made build a temple.
The city knew one boom, until the day when " barbares" ransacked the city; it was then given up, and its stones were used to build the city close to St Rémy of Provence. Glanum was redécouverte by the archeologists at the 20th century, and was restored to make it possible to make it visit with the public.
