Although the official cause of the death of the Emperor is old age, Maximus understands immediately that he was assassinated by Commode. This is why, when this one offers to him to serve it as it served his father, Maximus refuses. Convenient its execution orders then, like that of its family. However, Maximus succeeds in thwarting the execution and flees. Having seen his died wife and her son, wildly assassinated by envoys of Convenient, it crumbles and loses conscience.
