Glacier of Oberaar
The glacier of Oberaar ( Oberaargletscher in German) is in the Canton of Bern in Suisse. Located at the bottom of the valley sheltering the artificial lake of Oberaar, the glacier is almost five kilometers long for a width of 800 meters. It covers a surface of five km.
Description
The glacier originates in a collar covered with ice, l´ Oberaarjoch (3216 m) between the Oberaarhorn (3631 m) and l´ Oberaarrothorn (3463 m). It goes down then towards the east between the Scheuchzerhorn (3456 m) located at north and the Aargrat (3132 m) in the south. The glacial language emerges at the end of the lake of Oberaar, at an altitude of 2310 meters. A torrent, l´ Oberaarbach runs out then since the stopping until the Lac of Grimsel. The glacier of Oberaar communicates with the Glacier of Fiesch via l´ Oberaarjoch and the Glacier of Galmi. The passage enters the glacier of Oberaar and that of Galmi marks the border between the Valaisan and Bernese territory . The hut of Oberaarjoch ( Oberaarjochhütte ) is close to the collar at an altitude of 3256 meters. It constitutes a big step for forwardings of high mountain on the axis Lötschental - Jungfraujoch - Col of Grimsel.
Evolution
The glacier of Oberaar was connected before with that of the Unteraar. During the glacial periods, the two glaciers went down until Bern. They are now separated from several kilometers.
