The Glacier Perito Moreno , of 5.000 m of face and 60 m height, located in the National park Los Glaciares of the province of Santa Cruz, Argentinian. Located at 78 km of El Calafate, it is one of most famous of the Patagonie Argentina.
With a surface of 250 km ² and a length of 30 km, it is one of the 48 glaciers supplied with the Field of southern ice of Patagonie, in the Andes cordillera, that Argentina divides with the Chile. This field of ice is the larger third reserves Fresh water in the world.
The glacier Perito Moreno is one of the three only glaciers of Patagonie which is not in regression. With the difference of other glaciers characterized by collapses of their walls, Perito Moreno detaches from the immense blocks of ice. At any time of the year, constant collapses of its frozen walls surprise. Vis-a-vis the Peninsula of Magellan, the wall of ice of the glacier advances by dividing the lake into two by giving origin to natural dams. Then water of the Bras Rico of the Lac Argentino goes up and starts to push and erode the glacier which becomes weaker and fall under the pressure. This spectacular collapse of the face of the glacier is carried out periodically; the frequency of this cycle is not regular, it can take one year to one decade.
The face of the glacier makes 5.000 roughly; m length, the height of ice is of 170 m, of which 60 m are emerged. It advances approximately 2 meters per day (700 m per annum). At certain places its thickness reached 700 Mr.
The first rupture was observed in 1917. The last date of March 2006, and the preceding ones occurred in 2004,1988,1984,1980,1977,1975,1972,1970,1966,1963,1960,1956,1953,1952,1947,1940,1934 and 1917, that is to say an average from once all the four to five years.
The glacier Perito Moreno was baptized name of the explorer Francisco Moreno, who studied this area at the 19th century and played an important role in the defense of the Argentinian territory, in the discussions for the determination of the border with Chile.
