First Glaciation of the quaternary era (time of the Pléistocène) which extended between -1.200.000 with -700 000 approximately . The name of Günz comes from a river, tributary of the Danube, located in the area préalpine at the south of the Germany, and is used with designer traditionally a glacial period following work as Penck and Brückner. In this classification, Günz is the first cold phase parmis a whole of four: glaciation of Günz, Glaciation of Mindel, Glaciation of Riss and Glaciation of Würm. Günz represents in any rigor only one state of glaciation in the the Alps, but it is contemporary glaciation of the Nebraska in North America, the glaciation known as Eburonian in Scandinavia, and the phase known as Beestonian in British Isles, which allows in deducing a total phase of cooling at that time.

However, this traditional classification today is exceeded, replaced by a isotopic Chronologie valid with the planetary scales.
