Giuseppe Siri
Giuseppe Siri , born the May 20th 1906 with Genoa (Italy) and deceased the May 2nd 1989 with Albaro, was cardinal of the Catholic church.
Biography
Giuseppe Siri was born in the parish from S. Maria Immacolata with Genoa, (Italy). His/her parents were Nicolò Siri and Giulia Bellavista. It entered to the Petit seminar of Genoa the October 16th 1917, then with the Grand seminar of Genoa and finally with the Gregorian pontifical Université, with Rome, in 1926. Ordered priest by the cardinal Carlo Minoretti the September 22nd 1928, it continued its studies and its pastoral Travail in Rome of 1928 to the autumn 1929.
Bishop
Named titular bishop of auxiliary Liviade and of the bishop of Genoa the March 14th 1944, it was devoted in May of the same year by the cardinal Pietro Boetto (Jesuit) in the cathedral of Genoa, San Lorenzo; in 1946, it was promoted with the episcopal see of Genoa. In 1953 it was high with the cardinalat by the Pape Pie XII. Like archbishop of Genoa, it was one of the most preserving prelates of the Concile Vatican II. Paradoxically, it is however also a personality which was recognized by the camalli (dockers) of Genoa, mainly communist. This will have was worth to him to be used like mediator for various recoveries for important conflicts in the port.
Papabile
It was claimed that it had received twice the majority of the votes to the Conclave; in 1958 and 1963 - it would have even desired to take the name of Gregoire XVII. Each time, in front of the threats of persecution against the catholics in the Soviet block - it was resolutely anticommunist - if it accepted papacy, it would have refused the tiara. Owing to the fact that what occurred in the conclaves is strictly confidential and that any cardinal which would reveal some the details would incur immediately the Excommunication, no documentary proof confirmed, nor moreover cancelled forever, this very widespread rumor, but the cardinal Siri itself held to contradict it.
He was one of principal the papabili in August and in October 1978 at the time of the conclaves which followed the death of Paul VI then that of Jean-Paul I {{er}}. Media have advanced that it had been at the head with the first ballot of the conclave of August, but had been in the final analysis beaten by the cardinal Albino Luciani, become the Jean-Paul pope Ist After the untimely death of this last, it was the principal conservative candidate opposed to the cardinal Giovanni Benelli, principal liberal candidate. Vaticanologists have advanced that the final winner, the cardinal Karol Wojtyła, become the pope Jean-Paul II, was selected like candidate of compromise.
It has be asserted as pope by group sédévacantiste which believes the rumors according to which he would actually have been elected in 1958 and 1963, but replaced by the cardinal Angelo Roncalli (Jean XXIII) then the cardinal Giovanni Montini (Paul VI). In spite of that, it remained in full communion with the Catholic church and refused to bring to its support to any catholic organization sedevacantist. An small group of sedevacantists, which has his center with Houston, in Texas, continues to proclaim that he is the legitimate pope, in spite of denials of the Siri cardinal itself. This small group however did not bring the least reasonable explanation owing to the fact that it forever desired to give its support for the movement traditionalist, owing to the fact that, until his death, he recognized Jean XXIII, Paul VI, Jean-Paul Ier and Jean-Paul II like legitimate popes, owing to the fact that he celebrated the mass paulinienne, according to the new rite, devoted according to the new rite, signed all the documents of the Vatican II, held of high official positions in the Church and taken the defense of the Vatican II. This position of obedience to the catholic hierarchy such as it is him held so much with heart that it made a point of marking it in its testament : " It is necessary to obey which it is necessary to obey, not to obey for which one does not need obéir."
The Siri cardinal died the May 2nd 1989 with the Villa Campostano , Albaro, and was buried with Genoa, in the metropolitan cathedral San Lorenzo. ----
