Giurgiu

Giurgiu is the capital of the Judeţ de Giurgiu in Romania, in the area called formerly Vlaşca. It is located in the middle of the mudholes and of the marshes on left bank of the the Danube. Three small islands face him of which largest which shelters its port, Smarda. On a rich ground where one cultivates corn in North passes the railroad towards Bucharest, the first line open to Romania, which was built in 1869 and was prolonged thereafter until Smarda.

The Bridge of the Friendship which links Giurgiu with Ruse, only in the bulgaro-Rumanian part of the Danube, crosses the river in the vicinity.

Population

According to the census 2002, Giurgiu has a population of 69.587 hearts. In 1900 its population was of 13.977. The annual increase in population is of -0,7%. Unemployment rate is of 17,2%. 16,8% of the population has less than 15 years, 3,6% more than 75 years.

History

The area around Giurgiu densément was densément populated at the time of the Dace S (first century before our era) as archeology proves it, and even Burebista had its capital there (it is thought that it was in Popeşti on Argeş river). At the time Roman it was the site of Theodorapolis, city built by the Roman Emperor Justinien (483-565).

The town of Giurgiu was probably founded at the 14th century, like port on the Danube, by merchants génois undertaking, who there established a bank and practiced the trade of silks and velvets. They baptized the city of the name of patron saint of Genoa, San Giorgio (holy Georges), name which it kept until now. One initially finds it in the Codex Latinus Parisinus , in 1395, during the reign of Mircea concealment Bătrân. The city was conquered in 1420 by the Othoman S which wanted by controlling circulation there on the Danube.

Strengthened city, Giurgiu was often implied in the wars for the conquest of the Low-Danube; especially in the fights carried out by Mihai Viteazul (1593-1601) against the Turks and thereafter in the Russo-Turkish wars. It was burnt in 1659. In 1829, its fortifications were finally shaven, leaving him for only defense a castle on the island of Slobozia, joined together at the coast by a bridge.
