History

In the beginning, the village depended on the parish of Rougegoutte. With the development of the exploitation of the mines of the valley and especially the fact that the majority of the Saxon minors, Bavarian or Tyroleans, did not speak French, a new parish was born in 1569. It was attached consequently to the diocese of Besancon.

The rise of Giromagny date completion of the the Middle Ages with the beginning of the exploitation of the mines of money, lead and copper by Habsbourg, then lords of the Rosemont. The activity of the mines continued until the 18th century, with a strong deceleration during the Guerre Thirty Year old. In 1648 the cardinal of Mazarin becomes owner of the mines of Giromagny, which does not prevent their decline and a strong economic deceleration of the city which will last until the first empire.

In 1813 the Boigeol brothers install a mechanical spinning mill then, in 1820 a weaving of 40 trades to arm manufacturing banner. Thereafter, the installation of a steam engine will allow the operation of power looms by compensating for the irregularity of the supply of hydraulic power of the river the Savoureuse. In 1868 the various Boigeol factories employed more than 1000 people who wove in 1882 fabrics of hemp, flax and cotton on 310 power looms and of many other trades with arm. The city, which counted 3156 inhabitants in 1881, included/understood moreover a sawmill and a tannery, tileries and mills.

The fort Dorsner, built between 1875 and 1889 according to the plans of the general Séré de Rivières, supplements in north the belt of fortification built around Belfort.

The way of railroad which connects in 1883 Giromagny to the Belfort-Paris line not only makes it possible to supply with coal the steam engines of textile industry and to export the products of them, but also to transport more than 40000 travellers per annum four years later. Strongly competed with by the road, the passenger traffic ceased in 1938. Last weaving ceased its activities in 1958 and the spinning mill closed in 1978. Currently, Giromagny lives especially thanks to the activity of its prefecture, Belfort.
