Giroie family

The Giroie or Géré (or Giroye or Giré ) are a family of the average aristocracy Norman. They gave their name to the commune of Saint-Céneri-the-Gérei. They were particularly established in Pays of Ouche where they restored the Abbaye of Saint-Évroult with the Grandmesnil.

The first known member of this family was Giroie († a. 1050], wire of a certain Arnaud called the Large . According to the Chronicler S, Orderic Vital and Guillaume de Jumièges, Giroie, resulting from two noble families franque and Breton, adopted the duke Richard II of Normandy which gave him the castles of Échauffour and of Montreuil-l' Argillé. Giroie is, with two of its nephews, the founder in 1050 of the Abbaye of Saint-Évroult. In 1040, one of its sons, Robert Ier Giroie, was implied with Raoul de Gacé, wire of Robert the Dane in the assassination of Gilbert de Brionne, count of Have.

During the years of the minority of William the Conqueror, Giroie are in conflict with the lords of Bellême. At the time of the marriage of Guillaume II Talvas († a. 1052), Lord of Bellême with Hildeburge, the girl of Raoul V of Beaumont-with-Maine, Viscount of Maine, the groom shows cruelty towards one of its faithful, Guillaume Giroie, brother of Robert Ier Giroie. This one is cruelly mutilated, the burst eyes, the nose and the ears crossed, émasculé, it returns to the Abbaye Notre-Dame of the Nozzle then to that of Saint-Évroult; he dies at the time of a voyage in Italy. It is supposed that Guillaume Talvas reproached him the construction of the castle with Saint-Céneri. At all events, a terrible vendetta follows. Giroie, having lost the castles of Échauffour and Montreuil, then take party for Arnoul, the son of Guillaume Talvas and his uncle Yves de Bellême, bishop of Sées. Guillaume Talvas was then overcome and constrained with the exile.

In 1059, Robert Ier Giroie, combined count Geoffroy II of Anjou, revolts against the duke William the Conqueror, with the hope to find its castles. It is found besieged in its castle of Saint-Céneri and dies during the seat. His/her son Robert II Giroie succeeds to him and fights with dimensions of the duke Guillaume then of his son Robert II of Normandy which returns its castles to him. However Robert II Giroie takes again the fight against Bellême and burns the castle of Échauffour occupied by Bellême. After having treated with the duke, in 1061 it is banished and leaves in Apulie, in the south of the Italy. To its return, he does not manage to be made restore his places. He east seems he poisoned by Mabile or (Mabille) of Bellême, girl of Guillaume II Talvas. The son of Robert II, fore-mentioned also Guillaume, prefers to turn over to finish his life in Apulie. One their parents, Hugues Bonnel, will avenge them by assassinating Mabille in 1082.
