Girodet-Trioson
Anne-Louis Girodet de Roucy , more known under its name of artist Girodet-Trioson (or more simply Girodet ), is a painter French born with Montargis the January 5th 1767, died with Paris the December 9th 1824.
The work of Girodet is located at the hinge of the two large artistic currents of the 19th century. The research of the ideal beauty according to the traditional guns of the painter registers it in the line of the neo-classic painters davidiens, while at the same time, by a strong will of innovation, it impregnates his paintings of a grace and a singular poetry, in harmony with the air of the time of his time, which precedes the romanticism.
Biography
Trioson is the name of his/her adoptive father. It passes its childhood to Montargis. As gifted for the Violin as for the Drawing, it makes its choice and joined Paris and the workshop of David in 1785, where it is one of the most talented pupils.
It passes the Prix of Rome first once in 1787 where it is disqualified to have left the sketches of the enclosure of the test (candidates having to have no outside assistance lasting the contest). It retente second once with the death of Tatius and obtains the second place. He is prize winner in 1789 with Joseph, recognized by his brothers .
He joined Rome then and painted there the Sleep of Endymion and Hippocrates refusing the present of Artaxerxès . In 1793, French is excluded from the Papal States and it leaves Rome, remaining in various cities of the peninsula Italy.
It regains Paris in 1795. It painted there several major paintings of which the portrait of Jean-Baptiste Belley in 1797, Miss Lange in Danaé in 1799, the Lesson of geography in 1803, the Funeral of Atala in 1808, the portrait of François-Rene de Chateaubriand in 1809. David was insult when its own table the Intervention of Sabines was placed in second position behind the Scène of flood of Girodet at the time of the Price of the Decade of 1810.
Its correspondence shows that it was very close to his parents. His/her father dies in 1784, his mother in 1787. Since its arrival in Paris it was protected by Doctor Trioson, close family friend, who will adopt it in 1809.
In 1812 it inherits a fortune which enabled him to be devoted to the writing of poems on the esthetism.
From 1813, it takes part in the decoration of the Château of Compiegne by painting several mural frescos there.
Girodet had a nonconventional lifestyle, alternating periods of retirement practically in the secrecy with periods of public life of dandy.
Work
Although having started like a faithful disciple of its Master David, he then endeavors to develop a personal style, testing with the light effects. With the Painting of History, he prefers a kind of éthéré symbolism, scenes of kind, dramatizing with excess his subjects, he excels in the installation and the work of the light. He hustled the codes of the sensuality and applied them to religious scenes.
He excels in the truth of the portraits, sometimes allegorical ( Jean-Baptiste Belley , Miss Lange in Danaé ), often close friends (the son of his adoptive father was painted at three times: young child, pre-teenager and teenager), it can reveal the heart of its characters as in his famous Portrait of Chateaubriand meditating on the ruins of Rome .
Its painting of history is often arranged with the facts to give a metaphysical or esthetic dimension of it (in its Révolte of Cairo , it paints several belligerents not having never taken part in the event).
One of its portraits, Miss Lange in Danaé (1799), causes a scandal because of its satirical sexual allusions. This anecdote, where Girodet is avenged for famous the Merveilleuse Miss Lange not to have appreciated a first portrait of it, illustrates well the irascible and unverifiable character of this painter.
Always painting in the neo-classic style , its tables rained however with the Romantiques thanks to the exaltés feelings represented. Its painting is not stripped of a certain sensuality; one of the most representative tables being its Endymion of which the representation as a faint beautiful young man, without any relief of musculature, goes against the traditional guns, or the representation of the centres pointed under the veil of the Mort of Atala .
Napoleonean Legend: the Apothéose of the French Heroes died for the fatherland during the war of Freedom (1802) represents the bard Ossian accommodating with the paradise the generals Desaix, Kléber, Marceau, Hoche and Championnet. This fabric does not cease astonishing by its innovative side announcing the first romanticism.
Girodet is also an illustrator of books, in particular for Jean Racine and Virgile.
