Giric Ier of Scotland

Giric Ier of Scotland Co-king of Scots of 878 with 889

We have little information on this king. The " Chronicle of kings d' Alba" who makes following the " Picte" chronicle; translated its name Gaelic of Giric, Grig or Grigh by the Latin Ciricius which was then reinterpreted in Grégorius. It does not mention the name of her father. Other posterior sources like the " Prophecy of Berchan" and the Latin royal lists Nominated regum & Cronica regum scotorum indicates it under the name of " Giric mac Dúngail & Grig wire Dungal ".

  • Alfred P. Smyth considers that Giric was the son of Donald mac Alpin and that it had seized the power being based on the principle of the Tanistrie in reaction against the monopolization of the devolution of the throne by the descendants of Kenneth mac Alpin.
  • A.A.M Duncan estimates on its side which Giric was only king of Pictes titrates that he did not claim his maternal ascent like wire of a girl of Kenneth mac Alpin and that he was thus the uncle of Eochaid mac Rhun. Mention of alum (p) naked (guard) included in the Chronicle being a transcription error for auunuculus (uncle).

In any event Giric arrived at the capacity after the murder of Aed mac Kenneth in Starthallan and was supported in its usurpation by another applicant Eochaid mac Rhun king of Breton of Strathclyde grandson by his mother of Kenneth Ier mac Alpin. The two allied ones divided the kingdom. The joint reign of the two kings lasted 11 years and they were explusés kingdom and disappeared together from the history at the time of the advent of Donald II of Scotland although the " Chronicle of Melrose, note for 897 Obiit Grig . According to the Nomina regnum he would have died in Dundum (Dundee?) and would have been buried with Iona usual burial of the kings of the dynasty.

The Duan Albanach does not mention the reign of the two kings whom he undoubtedly regards as usurpers. The Chronicle of kings d' Alba raises simply that it had under their 11 years reign an eclipse of the sun the June 16th 885 day of the Ciricius Saint.

The posterior chroniclers as Andrew de Wyntoun taking as a starting point the royal list of the Nominated regum do not hesitate by allotting to Gregorius the epithet of Grand and add that it made conquests in Bernicie and that it gave the first freedom to the church of the Scots controlled by the Pictes (?).
