Gipsy Kings

The Gipsy Kings are a made up group musicians resulting from two families, one Montpelliéraine (Baliardo) the second being Arlésienne (Reyes). At the conclusion of a Pèlerinage with the Saintes Marry Sea during the Années 1970, Tonino, Paco and Diego Baliardo, grandsons of Manitas de Plata, became acquainted with their cousins Nicolas, Canut and Paul Reyes, wire of Jose Reyes.

Jose Reyes and Manitas de Plata were precursors. Produced by the famous photographer Lucien CLERGUE, they as of the years 1960 were a resounding success which enabled them to occur inter alia in Carnegie Hall of New York or with the Royal Albert Hall in London. At that time, they play for various personalities of the artistic world such qur Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau or Salvador Dali . But the friendship between the two man is surbedded, they end up separating and carrying out their careers separately.

Under the impulse of Chico Bouchikhi is born the group Gipsy Kings which will be made known after a few years of galère with the tubes Bamboleo and Djobi Djoba produced by PEM in 1987. This album will be a success resounding both in France and in the whole world and will be the beginning of long series.

Twenty years later, Gipsy Kings carried out as many round the world tours as their career counts years, they remain the French group which sells the most discs through planet in spite of a shy person recognition within their country of origin. They carry on their road inlassablement and are devoted in addition to the fight for a better recognition of the genocide gipsy during the second world war.

Members

Gipsy Kings are composed of two relationships families: the Reyes and the Baliardo ( Reyes means Kings in Spanish). They are cousins of Manitas de Plata.

Chico Bouchikhi was also member of the group but it left it after the album Mosaïque to create its own group Chico & the gypsies . The “business Gipsy Kings” would like that separation is related to a history of big money.

Indiscretions: Nicolas REYES currently works with the realization of its first album solo, Kema the young wonder soloist of the group Chico & Gipsies should take part in its realization. Canut REYES works in addition with the realization of its second album solo in collaboration with the Boclé brothers who accompanied Gipsy Kings in 2000 & 2001. Documentary

" Tierra Gitana" Binder PERRY (1996): this documentary recalls the history of Gipsy Kings from the suburbs of Arles in the Années 1950 in the American concert halls. The force of this documentary is to grant little place to the aspect society man of the group and to focus themselves on their course and the genesis of their history.

Concerts

" Live At the Royal Albert Hall" (1989): concert filmed at the time of their first world tour following the album Gypsy Kings.

" Live with the Zenith of Paris" (1990): not marketed, certain visible extracts on youtube. Concert recorded in January 1990 with the Zenith of Paris during the round of the Mosaic album.

" US Turn 1990" Freddy TO RAISE (1991): concert given in July 1990 to Greek Theater of Los Angeles during the round of the Mosaic album.

" Live At Wolf Trap" (1996): not marketed, concert recorded in Wolf Trap of Washington in 1995. One can see of them extracts throughout documentary Tierra Gitana. Some rare compies circulates.
