Giovanni Pisano

Giovanni Pisano (Pisa, 1248 - 1317) is an architect and a sculptor of talent and reputation like his/her father Nicola Pisano, and whose work shows an influence of the Gothic French and traditional style pisan.

Biography

It is formed with the workshop of his father with Arnolfo di Cambio and during these years it collaborates in the pulpit of the Baptistère of Pisa (in 1260) and in the pulpit of the Dôme of His (1265-1269), even if the attribution of the various sculptures which compose these works are discussed and complex.

It had a role surely more important in the execution the large fountain (1275-1278) of the place of the Commune with Perugia, where it signs near the name of his father (last works documented of Nicola Pisano).

It then resumes unfinished work of his father: the baptistry of Pisa, the dome of His, where he is Master-mason of 1285 to 1296, where he lengthens the nave of a span, and he establishes the monumental frontage of which he finishes the lower part with a great profusion of statues (today with the Museo dell' Opera Metropolitana del Duomo).

Giving up the building site of the Dome of His, perhaps for dissensions with the local government of 1297 to 1301, he works with the pulpit of the church of Sant' Andrea to Pistoia (1297-1301). Later (1312) works with the Madonna collar Bambino of the vault of Scrovegni de Padoue.

In 1313, it to him is ordered the monument of Marguerite of Luxembourg (Marguerite de Brabante, woman of Arrigo VII of Luxembourg died in 1311). It is the last remarkable work of Giovanni Pisano which one preserves today only a few pieces at the museum Sant' Agostino of Genoa.

It had Tino di Camaino as raises.
