Giovanni Papini

Giovanni Papini , born with Florence the January 9th 1881 and dead the July 8th 1956, is an Italian writer.

Biography

Wire of Luigi Papini, a republican craftsman and anticlerical who had fought under the orders of Garibaldi and Erminia Cardini, Giovanni is impassioned as of childhood for the reading. He becomes teacher, and founds in 1903 with Giuseppe Prezzolini the review Leonardo ; he also contributes to the review He Regno , directed by the nationalist Enrico Corradini. Four years later, it publishes the twilight of philosophy ( It crepuscolo dei filosofi ), proclamation in which Papini proclaims the death of philosophy, and the pilot plugs ( He controlled cieco ), a collection of news. Always in 1907, because of a dissension with the other collaborators of the review, the publication of Leonardo stops. It is at that time of Papini marries Giacinta Giovagnoli.

In 1911, it founds with Giovanni Amendola a new review, Animated it , which appears only until 1913. In the memorie of Iddio , in 1912, Papini expresses with violence its nihilism and its rejection of Christianity; it starts a scandal while implying that Jesus and the Jean apostle could have maintained a homosexual relation. The same year is published its autobiography, a man finished ( a uomo finito ), which remains one of most known of its works. From 1913 to 1915, it directs the review Lacerba . Papini also writes some poetic collections; it is undoubtedly in 1920 that it converts with Catholicism, and the following year, its Vie of Christ ( Storia di Cristo ) is a best-seller in its translation in English language, The Life off the Christ .

It approaches the Fascisme gradually, and dedicates the first volume of sound Histoire of the Italian literature to Mussolini in these terms: " in Duce, friend of poetry and poètes". He declares himself favorable to anti-semites measurements taken by the fascistic mode; when this one crumbles, in 1943, Papini takes refuge in a convent franciscain, with Verna. After the Second world war, largely discredited, there remains constant by the catholic political movements of right-hand side, and publishes several tests.
