Giovanni Domenico Maraldi
Giovanni Domenico Maraldi also known under the name of Maraldi II or sometimes francized in Jean-Dominique Maraldi , is a Mathématicien and Astronome free - Italy N born on April 17th, 1709 with Perinaldo, Comté of Nice and dead on November 14th, 1788, even city.
Biography
Nephew of Giacomo Filippo Maraldi (also named Maraldi I), it arrives at Paris in 1727 where he becomes member of the Academy of Science in 1731.
At Paris, it carries out geodetic measurements by using the eclipses of the moons of Jupiter to determine longitudes and measures a difference of 9 ' 23" between longitudes of Greenwich and Paris (current value: 9 ' 20,93").
It observes several comets: the first comet of 1742 (C/1742 C1, 1742), in April 1743 that discovered by Klinkenberg and De Chéseaux (C/1743 X1, 1744), in 1746 that discovered by Chéseaux (C/1746 P1, 1747), the Halley's Comet in 1759, 1762 the Comet of Klinkenberg (C/1762 K1, 1762), that of Messier in 1769 and calculates their orbitres. It will observe also the transit of Mercure and Venus.
In parallel, it takes part much with his cousin César-François Cassini in the development of the chart of France.
Maraldi contributed to the publication of twenty-five volumes of the Connaissance of times and published the catalog of southern stars of Lacaille Coelum Australe Stelliferum .
Of August in September 1746, whereas it observed with Jacques Cassini comet discovered the same year by Chéseaux, it discovered two “stars nebulas” which are now recognized as globular clusters: M15 in PEGASE on September 7th, 1746 and m2 in the Aquarius on September 11th, 1746 (Maraldi 1746). It continued to observe comet until the 5 December of the same year.
Giovanni Domenico Maraldi withdraws in 1772 with Perinaldo, its birthplace where he dies on November 14th, 1788.
In 1935, in its homage like that of his/her uncle Giacomo Philippo, a crater of the moon bears the name of Maraldi (19,4N - 34,9E - 39 km diameter).
