Giovanni Battista Re

Giovanni Battista Re (January 30th, 1934, Borno-) is a high prelate and a cardinal of the Roman Catholic church which acts as prefect of the Congrégation for the bishops.

Biography

Born Borno, close to Brescia (Italy), it entered to the small seminar of Brescia, where it studied philosophy and theology before being ordered priest on March 3rd, 1957. Its bishop, Mgr Giacinto Tredici, send it to Rome to perfect his formation to become teaching. It was graduate in canonical Droit to the Gregorian Université.

He was member of the ecclesiastical pontifical Académie and worked with nonciature of Panama. He will go to Iran and will become secretary of Mgr Giovanni Benelli. He will be named assessor of the Chancery of State per Jean-Paul II in 1979. Jean-Paul II appoints it assessor of the Chancery of State, on December 12th, 1979.

In 1987, it is named bishop, secretary of congregation and member of Crowned College. It was one of the collaborator close relations of sovereign pontiff and became director of the congregation in 2000. It also dealt with commission on the Latin America. In 2001, it was created cardinal at the time of a consistory. It would have been papabile at the time of the conclave of 2005.
