Published first once in 1550, it is the subject of one second edition in 1568. The first edition comprised, actually, only the lives of the authors died during the writing of its work. However an exception came to cancel the rule, it is that of Michel-Angel which appeared in it already at the time of the first edition. Giorgio Vasari orders there the artists who preceded it or who are contemporary for him from the historical point of view. It gathers data, so much on the artists than on their works (biographical investigations, catalogs of works, anecdotes and legends). It is the first, in the Vite , to use the term Renaissance to qualify its time (" rinascimento of bleated maniera" incarnated by Raphaël and Michel-Angel of which the goal and the imitation of work of old and who appear according to him in second half of the 12th century). This work appears, today, like one of the elements founders of the Histoire of art.
It is of Vasari that would come the " term; gothique" , comparing the strange architecture of the Middle Ages with the cruelty of the people of the Goths.
