Giorgio Of Geneys

Giorgio Of Geneys (born the April 29th 1761 with Chaumont (Italy), in the Piedmont - died the January 3rd 1839 with Genoa) was an Italian admiral, considered as the true founder of the marine Sardinian , the ancestor of the Marina militare Italy. He was however born in the High Valley from Suse (Val of Suse).

Biography

Giorgio Of Geneys was enlisted at only 12 years like guardiamarina di 2a class in the maritime force of the Piedmont, which was limited then to only one small frigate (the San Carlo , 32 guns and 230 men of crew), a gross Felouque, a galéotte captured with Tunisian pirates and minor boats. He becomes vice-admiral in 1811, after having carried out all the wars Révolution naires and Napoleon iennes, like with the seat of the roads of Toulon, in spite of the weakness of his fleet. It orders and reorganizes then the navy in two small squadrons (22 officers, 46 officers marines, 117 sailors and 324 oarsmen then composed manpower of this marine).

With the Restoration, Of Geneys becomes one of the diplomats who, to the Congrès of Vienna, contributes to make annex Genoa and the Ligurie with the Royaume of Sardinia as of 1814. This reinforcement in particular enables him to make arm two new frigates ( Commercio di Genova and Maria Teresa , 64 guns), of the frigate Maria Cristina (44 guns), of the corvette Tritone (22 guns), of the brigantin Nereide (14 guns) in addition to goélettes and small boats. To this fleet, he added four half-galères, certainly exceeded but useful to give hunting to the felouques Moorishes. He founded with Genoa the Regia Scuola di Marina (the royal Naval college) in 1816 which is the ancestor of current the Accademia naval of Leghorn. In 1822, a squadron of three modern frigates, under its command, crossed in the the Western Mediterranean while wetting in the ports of Tunis, Algiers and Tangier what allowed the signing of commercial contracts with the Morocco and the Ottoman Empire. In 1825, it also orders the forwarding of Tripoli what leads to a new naval triumph and prevents piracy in the Mediterranean. The admiral, count and baron Of Geneys died the January 3rd 1839 with Genoa.
