Gion Matsuri
Gion Matsuri , a festival which proceeds with Kyôto, was initially founded in 869 to fight against the plague which devastated the city at the time.
The evening of the July 16th, all the traditional districts are illuminated and decorated with lanterns, hangings and banners of flowers. The next morning, the great procession begins with the sanctuary Yasaka, close to the district of Gion.
With place then true processions of about thirty tanks accompanied by flutes, drums and gongs. These tanks represent the various districts or corporations of the city. One can see Geiko and Maiko on the threshold of their house at the time of this festival.
