Gion
Gion (祇園 or 祇をん) is a district of Kyôto to the known Japan for its Geisha S. This name indicated in the beginning the sanctuary Yasaka, from where share each year the procession of the famous Gion Matsuri, one of largest the Matsuri of the country.
Gion is divided into two hanamachi (districts of geisha): Gion Higashi (祇園東) and Gion Kôbu (祇園甲部). In spite of the decline of the number of geishas since a hundred years, these districts remain famous as regards the safeguarding of the traditions. Today, part of this district is classified historical heritage of Japan.
Contrary to the popular belief, Gion is not a district of Prostitution since the geishas do not practice the prostitution.
