Gilles Saussier
Gilles Saussier (born in 1965 with Suresnes) is a Photographe French.
Biography
Gilles Saussier was born in 1965 with Suresnes, and resides at the Andelys in the Eure.
After five last years at the agency Gamma (1989 - 1994), Gilles Saussier breaks with the photojournalism and starts to work with experimental projects which intersect the kinds of documentary photography, the conceptual art and visual anthropology. From 1995 to 1996, Saussier resides at Dhaka, Bangladesh, and works on the project Living in the fringe , a corpus of portraits and landscapes devoted to the inhabitants of the river islands (tanks) of the Brahmapoutra and Bay of Bengal. In Return to the country , exposed for the first time to Dokumenta XI (2002), he proposes a poetic mediation on the cohabitation of the uses and the imaginary ones of the landscape in valley of the Epte at the border of the Île-de-France and the Normandy. Another project Studio Shakari Bazar begins in 1997 by an exposure under capital in the old city from Dhaka and the distribution from 74 portraits to the inhabitants from the Hindu district from Shakhari Bazar. Since, Gilles Saussier returns visit to his images and their owners. He documents the dissemination of his images in the street and carries out new generations of portraits (2001, 2004). In 2003 and 2004, it intervenes within the framework of two great projects of urban renewal: in the district of the Upstream-Quentin with Cherbourg, in the Malakoff district with Nantes with association Populates & Culture 44 where it carries out two exposures in situ ( the model apartment & Bivouac ). The most recent project of Gilles Saussier, the table of hunting , is an archeology of its own images of the Rumanian revolution with Timisoara, presented in 2005 to the Kunstmuseum of Basle within the framework of the exposure Covering the real .
For Gilles Saussier, photography is an act which unceasingly modifies the relation between the photographer, the subject photographed and the spectator. The historian of art Emmanuelle Chérel written:
It will be agreed that it is the externality that problématise Saussier. Contrary to a psychological model where ego exists full with its significances before coming into contact with the outside world, they allow an experiment which admits that it me is carried out while expressing itself. The vision and the representation of oneself and other change unceasingly in the experimentation. (...) In other words, the photographs of Saussier do not make image. They return the spectator to his own definition. This one is taken in a confrontation between the perception of him even as an image and what undermines this perception, between vision and engagement in the vision (and consequently a particular form of corporeity), between fixed forms and moving forms, variables ad infinitum. Divisions of a reality and a fiction, the proposals for a G. Saussier do not fix the gestures and an account, but, hustles the stable work of definition of the memory of the images. Photography, this fragile trace, circulates between the bodies and the glances. The spectator, is fixed in no right place. Engaged in the complexity of the process représentationnel, there remains free, has of its movements, its emotions and its judgments. Its glance moves at the same time as the objects and its thought (even theoretical) is migrante. (Emmanuelle Cherel: the show flat, of the guest to the citizen , Re-examined 303,2004).
