Gilles Farnaby

Gilles Farnaby (* 1560 with Truro, Cornwall - † London, November 25th 1640) is a Compositeur English.

He is especially known by his production for the virginal one: he is one of many the Virginal ists and Madrigal English ists which illustrated the English music during the reigns of Elisabeth II and of first kings Stuart.

His/her Thomas father was professor, and his/her cousin Nicholas, factor of virginals taught him the music. He made his studies with Oxford, obtained his diploma in 1592 and lived then in London. One knows few details on his life. Fifty and one of its compositions for the virginal one or the harpsichord appear only in the virginal Fitzwilliam book on fifty three! It also composed of madrigaux (Canzonets, 1598), of the Motet S, the Psaume S etc, parts often of a great originality.

His/her son, Richard Farnaby, is also known as type-setter.
