Gilchrist Olympio

Gilchrist Olympio was born with Lome the December 26th 1936 with the Togo. Wire of President Sylvanus Olympio, assassinated by Gnassingbé Eyadéma, it made its studies with the the United States, then between as Economiste with the Fonds international currency in Washington, before becoming businessman in Africa.

Entered the Togolese opposition, he was condemned to died twice by the Eyadema mode and has escaped with several attempted murders.

He had a great influence in Togo starting from the Sovereign National conference which took place from July in August 1991. This conference set up a government and a Parliament of transition.

It directs the UFC, Union of the forces of change, since 1992.

It is isolated race with presidential of 1993 for nonconformity of doctor's certificates. With presidential of 1998 whereas the examination gave him a broad advance on its challenger, the outgoing president, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, this last made stop the calculation of the voices and was proclaimed elected as of the first turn with 52,13% of the voices. According to the European Union, of which the observers followed the electoral process, this election “had left its legal framework”. Many demonstrations of dissatisfaction were followed then from there through all the country which is wildly repressed by the army.
