Biography

Gilbert de Riberolles was the second of the nine children of Joseph-Just de Riberolles, a trader who had acquired a rather handsome fortune by making trade with Thiers and with Lisbon. The nobility of the family went back to Barthélémy de Riberolles († 1763), paper manufacturer with Thiers, which wanting to withdraw itself from the arbitrary and vexatious impositions which choked all industries, had acquired a privileged office.

Gilbert Riberolles followed the same career as his father and grandfather and while several of his/her brothers made acts of gentlemen and endorsed the military costume, did not believe him to degrade itself while remaining with the head of the paper factory, source first of the wellbeing and the notoriety of its family.

In this modest position, it démérita not and soon had conquered the regard and the consideration of all its fellow-citizens. During the creation of the provincial Parliament of Auvergne in 1787, the need that one had men intelligent and educated of the resources and interests of the material resources of the country made it indicate to be one of the representatives of the Tiers state. Its experiment of the businesses and its practical knowledge made it very useful in the commission or office of the Highways Departments where it sat beside M.Branche and of the Count d' Espinchel. These popular tendencies were well-known. Also the third state of the Seneschalsy of Auvergne, so rich in capacities however, did not hesitate it to go to seek it in the assembly of the Nobility with Riom, to make its fourth of it appointed with the General states. He was elected the March 21st 1789 by 265 votes out of 393 voters

He binds to Gaultier de Biauzat, Sémonville, Grenier and with Fayette, his former colleague with the provincial Parliament and however gives his support to the third state. He seems to have taken the word as a public only once in the interest of an extension of territory to give to the district of Thiers. Of return to Thiers, it does not give its support to the execution of the king but takes part in a forwarding of support for the Lyoneses in resistance to the monarchists; on its return he will be imprisoned then slackened. Under the Consulate, by 16 germinal year decree IX (April 6th 1801) it is named general receiver of Finances of the Puy-de-Dôme, function which it occupied until in 1812 and to which it was replaced by his brother Barthélémy Joseph Riberolles. He dies in Thiers the November 26th 1828.
