Gilbert Trigano

Gilbert Trigano , born the July 28th 1920 with Montreuil-sous-Bois (Seine-Saint-Denis) and deceased the February 4th 2001, is a Business man French, famous to have developed the Club the Mediterranean.

Born in a Jewish family from tradesmen originating in Algeria, Gilbert Trigano joined during the war the Résistance, then a communist organization , the plain Forces of patriotic youth. With the Release, it is Journaliste during a few years, writer with the Avant-garde , body of Communist youth, then international reporter to Humanity .

It joined then the family company of fabric of tent (the company André Trigano, of the name of his/her brother mayor of Pamiers in Ariège), which becomes supplier of the Club the Mediterranean. Club Med, as it will be called, was created in April 1950 by Gerard Blitz, champion of swimming and Belgian diamond cutter, with whom Trigano creates a village of fabric to the Balearic Islands, with Majorque; will follow Italy, Greece then many other establishments. In 1953, Gilbert Trigano becomes finance manager of the company, of which he becomes chairman in 1963. This same year the Club gives up the associative statute to become a business enterprise, in the form of public limit company.

In 1984 it is named delegated First minister in charge for the new formations in the cabinet of Laurent Fabius.

In 1993, the son of Gilbert, Serge Trigano, succeeds to him the head of the Mediterranean Club. In 1997, the Trigano family, for a long time minority in the capital, is évincée company by her shareholders, carried out by the family Agnelli (shareholders of the Italian group FIAT). Burgundian Philippe, before with the head of EuroDisney, replaces Serge Trigano with the presidency of Club Med.

The July 6th 2000, the 16th Criminal Court of the Court of Bankruptcy of Paris condemns Gilbert and Serge Trigano to eight month of suspended sentence and 30.000 francs of fine, for “manslaughters” as former leaders of the Mediterranean Club. This lawsuit was the continuation of the accident the February 9th 1992, with the Senegal, of a plane in bad state, chartered by Club Med. It had been crushed with the landing with Cape Skirring, killing 30 people (see 1992).

Gilbert Trigano implies himself in the creation of data-processing workshops for the young people of the suburbs and in actions of professional insertion of the young people by the economic activity. He also sets up a formation at the trades of tourism for young people of two banks of the Mediterranean, wishing in particular to contribute to the bringing together between Jews and Arab. He dies in 80 years, in the night of the 3 with the February 4th 2001. He is buried in Paris, with the Cimetière of Montparnasse (30e division).
