Gilbert Ier de Gévaudan

Gilbert Ier of Millau , born towards 1055, assassinated in 1111 was Viscount of Millau and Lodève, then count de Gévaudan and, by marriage, count de Provence. He was wire of Berenger, Viscount of Millau and Rodez, and Adele de Carlat, viscountess de Carlat and of Lodève.

He divided the titles of his parents with his brother Richard: he accepted Millau and Lodève, while his/her brother had Rodez and Carlat. Having various grounds in Gévaudan, it benefitted from it to raise the title of count de Gévaudan , fallen in disuse since less than one century.

In 1073, it marries Gerberge (1060 † 1115), countess of Provence, girl of Bertrand, count de Provence, and of Mathilde. They had two girls:

  • Soft (1090 † 1130), married in 1112 with Raimond Berenger III (1082 † 1131), count de Barcelone.
  • Etiennette († ap.1160), married to Raymond († 1150), lord of the Beams. Their son will emit claims on the Comté of Provence, thus beginning the Guerres Baussenques.

In 1096, at the time of the recasting of the church of Toulon, Gilbert the creation of a monastery in the Stoechades islands envisages, these three islands which are in the south of Hyères. After its assassination which has occurred in 1111, it was his/her Douce daughter and her son-in-law Raymond-Berenger II who succeeded to him.
