Gilbert Garnier
Eugene François Gilbert Garnier (January 31st 1874 with Paris - September 21st 1964 with Nice), is a Militaire French. He is the second of wire of Jules Garnier.
He enters to Polytechnique in October 1892. He is classified 158e on 250. Gilbert intends himself quickly for the army and more precisely in Artillerie.Dès October 1894 it is named second lieutenant of artillery. It is thus sent with all the other artillerists to the prestigious school of the castle of Fontainebleau for two years of application of which one with the 18th artillery regiment. It finishes this formation on July 30th, 1896, hardly 22 years old. The commander of the school notes then: “not very hard-working, not very serious. Very vigorous and flexible, very suited to the exercises of the body, very good rider…”
20th RA in Poitiers (October 1896 - July 1899)

13th RA (October 1900 - March 1907)
Because of his results, Gilbert is now affected of office to the first division of cavalry of Paris and to the 12th horse battery of the 13th RA. Where he will exert as lieutenant as a second then in first until March 22nd, 1907, date with which he is named captain. On this photograph he is lieutenant. The 13th RA is based at that time in Vincennes for the traditional batteries of 75mm and in Paris for the horse batteries to which belonged Gilbert 28 years old it Marie on August 2nd, 1902 with Suzanne Dutilleul (born on January 21st, 1877, deceased on August 13rd, 1955). It is the last of the three girls of Jules Dutilleul (1837 - 1883) senator of North in 1879, member of the Company of Sciences in 1867 and mayor of Lille, and Valerie Adélaïde Octavie Marie Testelin (1845 -?).
Technical Cours superior of the artillery (1907 - 1908)
March 23rd, 1907 it integrates the 1st RA stationed into Bourges as a captain and will follow the formation of the technical higher Course of artillery of October 1907 until September 1908. Its career will take another turning. Its times of command out of battery enabled him to show its value with its superiors. In Bourges it is illustrated particularly; its notes are excellent (metallurgy 18, artillery 20, manufacture 19, buildings and machines 18,5). Very suited at all the engineering services, without distinctions and particularly ready to be employed in a manufacturer establishment, either at the office of the studies, or with the workshop of precision - Bourges, on September 4th, 1908” The day before, on September 3rd, was born his/her daughter Jeanne Andrée Genevieve in Paris 16th.
Workshops and arsenal of Puteaux (September 1908 - October 1913)
With the favor of his excellent technical results, Gilbert is named in the State particular Major of artillery, in particular assistant of the director of the engineering departments of Puteaux. Gilbert works in 1910 on a sitogoniometer, instrument with hand comprising a compass and a sitometer, which allows the measurement of the magnetic bearing and angles of inclination. This instrument allows only rising dispatched. It refers to the topographic process consisting in tracing the aiming relative to an unknown point by directing a small plank towards at least a known direction. In the same way in 1912 he works on a material of 75 of cavalry Miss 1913 as well as an apparatus of pointing of the material of 75 anti air car. Gilbert organizes the manufacture on a large scale of it. These materials become lawful. In thanks of its exceptional services he is proposed for the cross of chevalier of the Legion of Honor which he obtains on November 9th, 1912
8th RAC (November 1913 - July 1915)
Gilbert, then still captain, is affected there. The 8th field artillery regiment is based in Nancy. It is composed of ten batteries 75mm and 2 or 3 horse batteries. It belongs to the XXe artillery body and is attached to the second division of cavalry.
When the war bursts in August 1914, Gilbert is commander of a battery. He will take part in 5 campaigns. For the first winter 1914 campaign, colonel Mauger ordering the regiment notes that it “showed during all the countryside cold blood and skill in the command of its battery, obtaining by his shooting of the remarkable effects. Everywhere worthy of the greatest praises, filling with calm and a perfect safety functions of advanced observer where its patients research often allowed him to distinguish and fix in an ensured way, stations the most exposed, positions of the enemy that it has contrebattu then effectively. Remarkable ordering battery - right, firm, equal character which gets all sympathies to him. Deserve to be promoted a major as soon as possible. ” Its regiment takes part in the battle of Morhange on August 20th, with the battle of Vitrimont on September 9th then to that of Flandres in November. During this first countryside it is quoted with the order of the 20th army corps on December 5th, 1914, little before his/her Alain brother is killed.
“ordering its battery since the beginning of the countryside constantly obtained very useful effects, while carrying its observation post very ahead, in particular with the combat of Léomont in front of Lunéville, Mametz (close of Bray on Somme) and in front of Monchy. With in the day of November 30th facilitated the progression of the infantry in the west of Langhemarck and destroyed a house where a German machine-gun was taken. ” It is at that time that Foch, which is the chief of staff of the XXe body, suggests to him the creation of a gun of 37mm which it will develop thereafter.
With the beginning of 1915, the 8th RAC is moved and takes part in the Offensive of Artois in May and June. Gilbert Garnier is named major on July 2nd, 1915. July 10th, 1915 are chief, the lieutenant-colonel ordering the regiment notes these states of services: “The Garnier captain was particularly distinguished in the engagements from May and June in front of Arras. Shining, bravery, cold blood with all tests. 11 months of war. He was the model of the commanders of battery. He has just been appointed major and called by the minister with the workshop of Puteaux. He leaves the best memory to the regiment - Lieutenant-colonel Schneider, on July 10th, 1915”
Return to the arsenals of Puteaux (1915 - 1919)
The major Gilbert Garnier thus takes again his responsibilities with the arsenal for Puteaux after having made watch of his warlike capacities. According to the suggestions of Foch, he will work in 1916 and 1917 on the development and the manufacture of the materials of 37mm model 1916 TR. This gun of 37 is declined in several forms: of battery, trenches, anti-aircraft, semi automatic for car machine-gun of cavalry, tank (standard Renault) and for engine of fighter plan. The gun of 37 will equip the whole recent Char Renault FT-17. It organizes of it the series production in industry while continuing its studies on the 75, the mortar of 130, a gun of 47… The famous aviator Guynemer associates it with his last victories He will also work on an electromagnetic corrector for a version DCA of the gun of 75mm. Besides Gilbert Garnier will obtain the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor on February 16th, 1916: “shining officer of troop at the same time as remarkable technician. With rendered services exceptional in construction and the development of the weaponry”
After the war

The monthly publication of the Polytechnic school pays homage to him on May 1st, 1965 and recall: “Very sensitive to all the forms of cultures, it adds to it a very sharp taste for the sports. He was champion of France of race on 400 and 800 meters, then one of the finest riders of his time and finally highly skilled mountaineer… He leaves the memory of a great example of varied gifts, and moral fiber and intellectual. ”
