Gilbert Génébrard
Gilbert Génébrard (or Genebrard ) is a Christian theologist and a religious French. He was born with Riom (Auvergne) the December 12th 1535 and died in Semur-in-Brionnais (Burgundy) the February 16th 1597.
Its family and her religious formation
He was the son of Pierre Génébrard, Procureur with the Présidial of Riom and Anne de Richevoye. Raised in Paris by the care of Guillaume Duprat, bishop of Clermont, it had as Masters Adrien Turnèbe, Jacques Charpentier, C. the Holy ones. He took the dress of cordelier to the Couvent of Riom, then that of Moine Bénédictin in the Abbaye of Mozac, of which he became Chambrier and where he would have learned the Hebrew .
Religious and intellectual life
In 1563, it was accepted doctor de Navarre. It became in 1566, professor of language Hebraic with the royal Collège of France. François Dirty was his pupil.In 1576, the bishop of Lavaur, Pierre Danès, was dislocated of sound évêché in favor of Génébrard because of its merits. But the General states of Blois did not confirm this choice. Upset, it was thrown like partisan of the Ligue.
Named in 1592 Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence, thanks to the steps of the Duke of Mayenne, it sat at the General states of 1593. During the tender of the town of Aix with Henri IV, it was withdrawn with Avignon where it published writings violent one in favor of the Ligue. Then, the Parlement of Aix banishes it out of the kingdom.
It could nevertheless withdraw in Exil in its Prieuré of Semur-in-Brionnais in (Burgundy) where it died on February 16th 1597.
Its work and its fame
Gilbert Génébrard was regarded as one of the most erudite men of his century. He worked fourteen hours per day. He had as friends a great number of Savant S and cardinal. The Cardinal of Richelieu passer by to Riom in front of its house would have exclaimed: “ O veneranda domus! ”.Pantaléon Thévenin quotes it in its comment of " Sepmaine" of Of Bartas, Fifth Day, with worms 92: “And Daire in three battles the stories are common are pled autheurs, this Daire was the last Roy Persien, deconfit entirely in the year of the world of 3779. according to Genebrard”.
