History
In 1338, the VAr became the Eastern border of France. The territory of Gattières remained however a foreign enclave on Right Bank of the VAr and this until in 1760, year when a treaty between the kingdoms of Sardinia and France integrated it into the French national territory. During the four centuries between these two dates, the city served as many times of head of bridge with incursions Italy in France.Spur dominating the VAr, the rock of Gastes to the natural escarpments offered an ideal and strategic site to the ligure aboriginals. Located on the layout of the Roman way with its ford on the VAr, Gattières held an important strategic position which was worth a tormented past. In time of war, they were alas numerous, the catches and the alternative losses of the village were frequent. Benefitting from the disorders which reign in Provence, the count Amédée VII of Savoy makes sure treason of the governor of Nice and on September 28th, 1388, dramatic turn of events: Nice and its back country are detached from Provence and are given to Savoy. Allégret de Mauléon, Gascon captain often qualified " aventurier" , but cash high fasteners in Savoy had seized the place of Gattières during a knack to which Amédée VII was not can be not foreign. October 25th, 1388, De Mauléon sold Gattières in Amédée VII for the price of 2000 guilders. Savoy thus had a starting head out of Right Bank of the VAr. The importance of this event was checked at the time of the wars between two banks of the VAr. The blazon of Gattières points out this historical fact: " Mouths with the gold lion holding in its dextral leg a money tower charged with a cross of the premier". Thus during nearly 400 years (1388 - 1760) Gattières will follow the destinies of the County of Nice, initially Savoyarde, then Sarde. The treaty of Turin (March 24th, 1760) will rectify the border between the Kingdom of France and that of Sardinia. Since its mouth to the confluence of Estéron, the VAr will divide the two states. Gattières is thus separated from the County of Nice and is attached to France. The commune is marked by the arrest of many villagers by the Germans in 1944, of which Ange GRASSI and Seraph TORRIN, tortured by the hung Gestapo niçoise then Avenue of the Victoire in Nice.
Various assumptions are at the origin of this name: - The first explanation comes from vegetable a formation known as " bleaches on grass with chat". One can also think of Latin cattus, cat with the suffix - aria. - The second assumption is explained by the strategic situation of the borough, crossing point of the VAr inclining to think of Latin vadum, ford, " gat" in nissart. - The third significance rests on the report which the ground would be bad, not very fertile " ground gaste".
