Gil Jourdan

Gil Jourdan is a hero as well as a series of Cartoon created by Maurice Tillieux for the magazine Spirou n° 962 of September 20th 1956. It carried out of it the totality of the drawings and the scenarios, except for the last four albums ensured by the draftsman Gos.

Gil Jourdan is not strictly speaking an original creation of its author. It is acted in fact of the character of Felix that Maurice Tillieux animated previously for Héroïc-Albums and that it continues, under another name, while changing editor. He is the same for the other main characters of the series: Croûton (the Cabarez inspector) and Dragonfly (Gas Lights). The series stopped in 1978 with the death of its author in an car accident.

It is amusing to recall that the first two episodes were prohibited in France by the censure of the time until in 1971, the Crouton inspector there being presented in a way considered to be disrespectful for the image of the police force.

Gil Jourdan lived all kinds of police adventures faggots of humor thanks to its comparses and to its adversaries, as animals as malicious. Adventures so much French ( Carats in bulk , On the track of one 33 turns , the immersed Car ), that exotics ( the Hell of Xique-Xique , the Glove with three fingers , the Chinese with two wheels ) with sometimes a key of fantastic ( Cargo liners of the twilight , Surboum for four wheels , Gil Jourdan and the phantoms ) but always with beautiful cars (the passion of Tillieux) and much of action.

Characters

  • Gil Jourdan , bachelor of law, is a private detective crafty one equipped with a humor grip-without laughing. Blue costume, white blouse, red bow tie, brown hair. The seat of its agency is with Paris. Moving back in front of no obstacle, it will even make escape from prison a driller of trunks in order to associate its services for what will be its first investigation.

  • Its right-hand man, André Papignolles says Libellule , yellow suit, white blouse, black tie, the ball with zero, sometimes capped of a hat either green or yellow, related to the bottle. Escaped from prison with the voluntary of Gil Jourdan and involuntary assistance of the inspector Croûton, it will line up cars well quickly in order to help Gil Jourdan in its investigations although it is not very courageous. It is given the responsability to restore the smile of the reader by his picturesque dialogs and its rows with
  • Tail-of-Cherry , the cultivated assistant of Gil. Black dress, red jacket, white earrings, it appears only episodically in the series.
  • Lastly, the inspector Jules Croûton , also in charge of the humorous animation of the series, it will take a more sober role gradually. Black Smoking, white blouse, blue bow tie, abundant russet-red moustache, hat and cane, it is the intimate enemy of Dragonfly which it had, well involuntarily, helped to make put in prison. Initially adversary of Gil Jourdan this inspector gaffor of the PJ will become then an invaluable ally.

Notice 1: like their creator, the characters of the series are all inveterate smokers except the main character.

Notice 2: there is no " méchant" recurring in the series.
