Data sheet
Titrate original: 魔法のプリンセスミンキーモモ (Mahō No princess Minky Momo, “Minky Momo the princess magician”)
, also known under the name of Magical Princess Gigi or Gigi (France), is the title of two different series from Japanese animation of Magical girl.
The first series, often called Sora Momo (“Momo of the sky”), was diffused in Japan in 1982-1983. The second series, often called Umi Momo (“Momo of the sea”), was diffused as from 1991. These two series are respectively the first and the third series of magical girl created by the Japanese studio Ashi Productions.
The two series share the same structure into two part and the same title; however the official title of the second part of the second series is.
The heroin of each series is a princess magician called Minky Momo ( Gigi in several version Western, of which the French version). However the second series is not a direct continuation with the first and although bearing the same name and having a similar drawing, both Momo are two people well distinctes.
One can easily recognize both Momo: the first carries a bar with a star (in the second series, it always carries a star, but more in the hair) whereas the second carries a bar with a heart.
In addition to the two televised series, four OVA also left:
- Magical Princess Minky Momo: Yume No naka No Round ( the round in my dream ) (1985)
- Magical Princess Minky Momo: Hitomi No seiza (1987)
- Minky Momo: Yume nor kakeru hashi ( The bridge for your tomorrow ) (1993)
- Minky Momo: Tabidachi No eki (1994)
There exists also an advertizing animation 3 minutes entitled Mahō No Tenshi Creamy Mami VS Mahō No Princess Minky Momo gekijō No daikessen having been realized in co-operation with the Studio Pierrot for the exit of the first OVA of Minky Momo and the OVA Long Good-Bye of the series Mahō No Tenshi Creamy Mami. It puts in scene a combat between heroins of the two series (Momo and Mami).
At present a third series exists only in Manga ( Miracle Dream Minky Momo ). No information carries to believe that it will be adapted in animation, but Takeshi Shudo, the author of the manga, discussed this continuation.
The second series as all the OVA are new in French.
Summary of the history
In the first series, Momo is the princess of the imaginary Pays of, “the country of the dreams of the sky”. Fenarinarsa is the residence of all the imaginary characters and fairy tales, but he is threatened of disappearance because the inhabitants of the Earth lost their dreams and their hopes. The king and the queen of Fenarinarsa thus send their daughter on Earth to help the human ones to find their dreams. Momo is installed in an “adoptive” family on Ground, accompanied by three companions having the appearance of a dog (Sindbook), a round monkey (Mocha) and of a bird (Pipil). Momo has several magic capacities of which most important allows him to be transformed into 18 year old young girl with news compétences. The most outstanding aspect of this first series is the death of Momo (episode 46) which succeeds the loss of all its magic capacities (episode 45). She will réincarnera herself thanks to the capacities of king de Fenarinarsa: although the series continues, the continuation is actually a dream of the newborn.
The second series has a similar scenario, except Momo comes from the underwater kingdom from, the “underwater country of the dreams”. At the time of certain episodes, it meets Momo réincarnée of the first series.
The two series are very different by the topics approached: if the first tackled subjects sometimes very adult, in particular on the paradox of the double adult child existence/of Momo, the second gives up these topics and remains a traditional series for children.
