Gift Quarrie
Donald O' Riley Quarrie , known as Gift Quarrie , born the February 25th 1951, is old a Athlète jamaïcain, one of best the world sprinters during the Années 1970.
Quarrie took part in five editions of the Olympic Games of summer. It received the recognition as well on the track as outwards, a statue the representative is placed at the entry of the national stage. A school bears also its name to Kingston. Musicians sang his glory, the song Reggae " Tribute to Donald Quarrie" was written by Joe Gibbs and The Guerillas. Career
Born in Kingston, Quarrie was selected for the 100 m with the Olympic Games of summer of 1968 but being wounded all alone with the drive, it could not take part in it.Already qualified with (but there not having run because not wounded), this sprinter is an good example of duration to the more high level, with his four Olympic medals (the last obtained in 1984). One year later, it could leave to study with the University off Nebraska with the the United States. Over there, its capacities of sprinters improved slowly. With the plays of the British Commonwealth of 1970, it gained gold over 100 and 200 m, surprising its more tested competitors. Fourth relay runner of the relay 4 X 100 m, it obtained a third title.
Quarrie repeated its performances the following year with the plays Panaméricains with Cali. Its time on 200 m were timed manually in 19" 8. Big favorite of the Olympic Games of summer of 1972, Quarrie suffered again because of wounds. It ran on 200 but was to give up in semi-final following a muscular tear.
In 1974, with the plays of the British Commonwealth with Christchurch, he became the first athlete to preserve his title on 100 and 200 Mr. Quarrie could take part in the Olympic Games of summer of 1976 without being wounded. On 100 m, it was beaten by another athlete of the the Caribbean, Hasely Crawford. On 200 m, he became Olympic champion with a time of 20" 22.
With the plays of the Commonwealth of 1978, Quarrie gained its third consecutive title over 100 m, but was eliminated in semi-final following cramps. Its fourth Olympic Games with Moscow transfer it being eliminated in semi-final on 100 Mr. defense from his title on 200 m failed, but it nevertheless succeeded in obtaining bronze.
In 1984 in Los Angeles, Quarrie did not form any more part of the elite of the sprinters and without surprise was eliminated in series on 200 Mr. Nevertheless, it could gain a last medal out of relay, finishing second of 4 X 100 m behind the United States.
