Gift Carlos (July 8th 1545 - July 24th 1568), Prince of Asturies, wire of Philippe II of Spain and his/her paternal and maternal cousin Manual Marie of Portugal.

He announced as of his low age a violent and vindicatory character, that the circumstances still turned sour. He was to marry Elisabeth de France, girl of Henri II; but his/her father, then widowed of Marie of England, supplanted it in this marriage (1559). Later, in 1565, one made him hope for the hand of the archduchess Anne, girl of the emperor Maximilien II of the Holy roman Empire, his/her cousin; but his/her father still opposed this union and was to marry the aforementioned Anne, his own niece, in 1570.

In 1564, Philippe II had made come in Spain the archdukes Rodolphe and Ernest, its nephews, in order to ensure the succession of its States to them, with the detriment of his/her son whom he said unable to control. Irritated this control, gift Carlos dared to treat, in 1567, with the Netherlands revolted against his/her father, and to promise to the rebels to put itself at their head. Philippe appeared to believe that gift Carlos had conspired against his life and made it stop: he was condemned by the Inquisition; a few months afterwards, he died in his prison, according to the ones, of consumption, according to others, poisoned (1568).

Its history provided the subject of the historical new first written by Saint-Réal in 1672 and entitled Don Carlos . Often following Saint-Réal, it inspired by works with Jean-Galbert de Campistron, André Chénier, Thomas Otway, Friedrich von Schiller, Vittorio Alfieri, etc
