Gießen ( Giessen ) is a university town of Germany in the center of the Land of Hesse, located on the Lahn including/understanding approximately 73000 inhabitants plus 20000 students. As capital of the district and chief town of the district of the same name it is a center of administration, education and trade.

Transport
The city is a node in the transport systems railway and highway. It is surrounded by highways of European importance:A5, A45/E41, E40, E44, A480, A485.
Culture
The cultural life is dominated by the Municipal Théâtre open in 1907. There are 3 famous museums, a museum communal, the Oberhessisches Museum , a museum dedicated to the chemist Justus Liebig and since 2002 the Mathematikum , single in Germany.University of Gießen
The Université of Gießen was founded in 1607 by professors Lutherans of the University of Marbourg who refused to convert with the Calvinisme. Until 1945 it named Ludoviciana after the founder, the landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt Ludwig V.. Since its reopening in 1957, it bears the name Justus-Liebig Universität after the most known researcher, the chemist Justus von Liebig.
University off Applied Sciences
In 1971 a technical university, the Fachhochschule Gießen-Friedberg with 10000 students was founded.
Botanical garden
Starting from 1609 the doctor and botanist Ludwig Jungermann installed a garden of medicinal plants ( Hortus medicus ). The Botanical garden of Gießen always exists and is the oldest botanical garden of Germany.

With the Vieux Cemetery many tombs of famous characters are, among like example the tomb of Wilhelm Röntgen. This cemetery was established in 1530 apart from the new fortifications and was used until 1900.
Places of leisure
Near to the downtown area, one can walk in the Botanical garden, with banks of the Lahn or the Schwanenteich (Lake with the Swans). On the hills surrounding the city are old strong castles like the Gleiberg and Staufenberg and the old monastery of Schiffenberg now converted into restaurants. On Schiffenberg there is a cultural program with musical representations.
